Title: New (to me) bally 809-4... with issues
Post by: losedi on February 23, 2021, 03:03:06 PM
I recently acquired this machine from a work friend. I have spent hours going through it and everything seems to be working mechanically. But it doesn't work. I am pretty good at reading diagrams and understanding mechanical things. But the diagrams in the manuals are not laid out well and none I can find have color coding.
I'll start where I can, when I got it the machine had sat for awhile. I went through and (gently) cleaned and lubed everything that moves. It would not take quarters so I adjusted the coin mechanism so that works now. But next in line is the "coin lockout coil" it has 50v but  will not work unless I jump it to the yellow at the transformer. After that the coin switch works for the coin relay and a relay  on top of the stack in the back  of the "5 coin circuit" but does nothing else. No handle release, no coin box relay, no insert coin light, no coin accepted light, nada... So I'm stuck.
Also, what do the 4 hidden white wheels (2 have numbers) do on the top  in the "5 coin" circuit?
Sorry for the unloading here but I couldn't find any other info to help. I'll take pictures when I get a chance to shrink to fit on here.

Thank you all in advance!

Check the coin relay switches bottom left near the back of the reel mechanism.
Manually operate the the armature/latching mechanism as to be sure it is operational.
Check for missing spring, separated wires and contacts functioning properly.

A photo of the machine and ID tag number would help a lot.

Yes that works when you push the coin sw down. But I first need the "slug rejector" to pull it finger back so the coins can come through. Lol. What operates the coin accepted and insert coin lights. I think this is all tied together.

Post a photo of the coin in relay.
There are a few switches in line for what you are describing.
The lock out coil is energized most of the time.
Except briefly between coins and de-energized on last coin, thus kicking the following coin(s) to the front coin tray.

If you post the model number, I’m sure Wolftalk can locate a schematic.

809-4 is part of the model number.  There should be more letters on the serial number plate below the handle.  Top number is the model, bottom is the serial number.

all the 809-4x machines I have info on are made for specific casinos - and none are MGM - so finding an exact schematic is unlikely.  However, the schematic for the 809-B is probably very close.  Typical differences would be things like jackpot bell, tower lights, electric door locks, etc. that aren't relevant for basic game operation.

you can find the paperwork on http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/ (http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/)

the hidden reels in the top compartment are the X2-X5 units.  They are basically pinball machine score reels and they are in the payout multiplier circuit on games with electrically stepped payout counters:

- if you play one coin, the odds unit ties the payout counter directly to the coin out switch on the hopper.  Every coin ejected = one step of the payout counter.

- if you play 2 coins, the odds unit connects the X2 unit to the hopper switch.  The X2 unit steps for every coin ejected, and connects the payout counter step-up coin every 2 steps.  So 2 coins out = 1 payout counter step.

- the X3-X5 units are similar, changing the coin/payout counter stepping ratio appropriately.

the coin lockout coil is the thing behind the coin mech causing the coins to reject.  Take a look at the schem to see the switches involved in getting it to power (game ready to accept coins).  Also note part of the circuit is feeding the handle release, so with that not working it's pretty safe to assume your issue is above wire 25-1 (schem K10) ... which still leaves a lot of switches and plug connections.  A jumper wire or voltmeter can be used to find the issue if a quick visual inspection and what david already mentioned doesn't turn up anything obvious.

the lights are on the schem around H16.  Coin accepted light comes on when the payout relay is unpowered (game not paying) and the coin relay is tripped (first coin accepted).

yell if more specific info needed
