Title: 831 Reels Not Spinning
Post by: rdaniel on February 27, 2021, 02:09:13 PM
Instead of interfering with PHAN000's thread I thought I should begin my own. The reels do not spin for the first two or three pulls of the handle. All three reels just go "klunk" and do not spin. It happens when the machine has sat over night and will also occasionally happens when the machine is warm but sitting for 30-40 minutes unplayed. After that, the reels spin normally and the machine plays as it should.

Try letting it warm up for 30 minutes or so.
If it plays normal after warming up.
Then it could be just cold lubricant slowing things down.

This would be the easiest way to narrow down the problem.

Thanks David. I will give it a try.

Sounds like something is starting to dry out. Some grease has hardened up..

Thanks, I will check for that also.

check the latch pawls under the reels (25 in below diagram).  If they can't pivot easily on the shaft, the little ledge on the top of it may not grab the toggle lever (35) and hold the index lever arm (51) out of the reels until the timer link (23) kicks the pawl away and releases the index arm.

RD:

Logic would lead me to think that your problem may be more lubrication than mechanical.  I just can not see how a mechanical misalignment would be abated by the passage of time, but what do I know.  As a matter of fact, what I do know is :rotfl: that in problems involving the reel mech a home made handle actuator has been invaluable.

Made from a piece of flat iron, a bolt and 2 nuts I can pull the reel mech out of the machine, place it on a bench and cycle it as many times and I want to without drawing blood from my thumbs while trying to fire the mech by hand.  I hear from old timers that Bally made such a device back in the day.  I think that I followed a "how to" thread on the old forum.  If you are going to keep these games around, and I know that you are, them make yourself one.  Mine is as crude and crude can get but it works.  When you want to work on a 4 or 5 reel game like my Arrowline or Medallist this handle pully thingy becomes essential and priceless.

My advice is free and worth every penny

Stay well all
Your Pal Ra

Thank you Wolf and Herbie. I will check on those areas of the reel mech.

Hi T. I purchased one of those tools  for manually spinning the reels. I got it on e-bay and had to out bid a very determined bidder. I have used it many times and it was well worth the money. I will check for old grease hidden in places.

I took the pictures but the resize thing is another story.  Perhaps RD can send you/us a picture of the real McCoy

Like I said all, this was used at the Flintstone casino but it works.  I would like to see what the Bally one looks like. :Scratch-Head:

Waiting with anticipation like Christmas Eve.  This Covid isolation has set my bar for excitement and stimulation really really low!

Here is a photo of my handle. Works great and might have been used by a Bally tech.

Bally’s always run hot. If your machine is cold, that’s probably the #1 reason it doesn’t spin right.
When you pull handle make sure wiper arms fall all the way back. A drop of light oil rubbed on the boards can help.
Also you can kick the reels just by pushing back on the pump arm with just a little vigor.

Thank you Old Reno. have not heard from you for a long time. What happens is that the reals lock in place without spinning for two or three pulls on the handle. After that the machine runs great. After sitting overnight, if I pull the reel mech and push the Link&  Stud Assembly two or three times then the reels will not lock up for the first few pulls.

It seems that the problem is solved if I simply push the timer link and stud assembly all the way back once that frees things up and the  machine runs great. Still a mystery why it locks in the first place but if this one  action fixes things then that is OK.

ok, I'm curious.

got a picture of what you are pushing and the position it's in before/after you push it?  Video is even better.

besides gummy lubricants, it's possible you have a broken roll/tension pin and you have slop in the mechanism
