Title: Bally 1114 low boy stopped paying out
Post by: ninnjinn on October 18, 2017, 07:36:37 AM
Hi Folks,

I have a 1977 Bally EM 1114 low boy.  I hit the top pay 777 about an hour ago and it paid out with no problems.  After I took pictures and admired my win and tray full of quarters, I proceeded to play on.  Game functions as it should except when I hit a winning pay line it does nothing.  Hopper doesn't try to work, bell doesn't ring, nothing.

Hopper still has about 100 quarters in it, I pulled the reels out and put them back in.  I pulled the hopper out.  there is no light on indicating an error, however I pushed the reset button 4 or 5 times.  Still nothing.  thought maybe it was a specific reel, (kept hitting a cherry) so I played until I got 3 plums, Still no payout.  Out of desperation, I unplugged the game for 30mins.    Still nothing.

when I get a paying line, the clicks and clanks and whirs are the same as when I don't hit a winning combination.

Could anyone give any suggestions?

I have pulled the 4 fuses on the back wall of the machine and did a visual inspection.  All the white plug connectors have been unplugged and plugged back in.  No way am I checking the soldered ones.  This thing has to have at least a mile worth of wires!  Holy Cow!!!  :Scratch-Head:

It is possible that your payout unit is not resetting. I would suggest that you pull the hopper and see if the wiper with the fingers has reset to zero. It rides on the printed circuit board.

Here is a photo of the step up unit that may need to be reset back.
Like Rdaniel said, if it didn't reset it won't know to payout.
Also look for a jackpot reset relay, it may need some contact cleaning.

A photo of the machine might be helpful.

Sorry guys I am trying to post pictures but it keeps saying file too large even if I only post one. I've got the camera on my phone turned down as far as it will go. I no longer have Photobucket because they want me to pay $400 a year

In your model machine the payout unit is separate from the hopper. It should be in the back of the  hopper.

Check the contact fingers/blades to see if they are near the 6 o'clock position.   Yellow Arrow
The unit can be manually reset by depressing the reset coil plunger down.    Red Arrow

Second photo of contacts near 6 o'clock ready for new game.

The fingers are between 8 and 9 o'clock.   I can manually turn it counterclockwise to 6. But when I push the lever down on the other side as seen in the picture it goes back to between eight and nine    I tried the machine after moving to 6 o'clock....  no payout.  tried it after hitting the lever,  still no payout....

While messing with the lever I noticed that whether it's in the resting position or if it's pushed down none of these strips of metal touch anything is this normal?

Black spiral cam appears to be broken or maybe its just the angle of the photo.
If you press down on the reset coil plunger the cam should spin back
to the 6 position. Or hold the plunger down and manually try to move it.
Maybe check for something lodged in between.

I was wondering about that.  I will take another look in the machine to see if I can find the piece.  If it is broken off,  where do I find another one?

Well I found a broken piece along with 3 quarters all the way in the back of the machine. I have no clue how they got back there unless they were rolling around 10 years ago or so when I picked up the machine from the previous owner I had to lay it on its back.

*sigh*  so now what do I do I highly doubt a forty-year-old machine is going to have Parts Readily available

If you look closely at the top photo sent at 3:04:35 PM, it appears that the rubber bumper on the carriage assembly is turning to mush. That could cause the level to stuck and preventing another payout.

Thats it!!!!!!!!!!!  :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: I just sit it back into place and it held the "fingers" at 6 o'clock and it paid out, but obviously when it reset, the piece fell out.   Now to see if I can find something that will be strong enough to hold it in place...  After every payout, it takes quite a whack when it resets...   :fryingpan: :fryingpan: :fryingpan:

Try contacting Alan Dorman at K-Lar.. Phone number is 702-363-9998. They are located in Las Vegas. They may have a Spiral cam for your Bally EM.. I know they have parts for the early Bally EM slots..

Happy to hear you found the missing part.
There is a posting for parts a few postings down on this site.
They might even have a new rubber bumper.

A possible fix for the cam would be Acrylic Cement depending on the material the cam is made of.
Also JB Weld to hold the pieces together, but that may also require 2 or 3 metal rods and or copper wire for strengthening.
This would be a delicate operation, but with patience it could be done.
As for the bumper a 1/4 inch thick walled vacuum hose cut to 1/4 inch long will work.
When finished check the tension on the return spring. Just enough to get back to the stop should be fine.
