Title: Pace/Ace/Space - Harolds Club
Post by: SeaBiscuit on January 31, 2024, 06:07:13 PM
I recently picked up this 25 cent Harolds Club, Pace/Ace/Space (non-working) which appears complete, with one or two exceptions.

Overall, fairly clean with the lock assembly missing, and a mechanical component on the right lower side clearly mia with the screw remnant broken flush with the frame (yellow arrow in the photo). Extraction of the broken stud shouldn't be a problem, but any insight into what this piece looks like, how it relates to the operation, and most importantly, where I might obtain a replacement would be very helpful. I am guessing the missing component somehow functions to put upward force on the lever above it which extends up to the goose neck coin exchanger (my theory).

My second request I realize might be a bit of a longshot, but, since some previous "tech" cut all of the wiring, I am hoping someone on here has either a schematic, or diagram which might save me some time reconnecting the harness.

Thanks in advance!

I uprighted your photos!

I have a service manual for this, I believe. Let me see if I can find the diagram showing the part.
Another member may chime in before me... he's good! (member 63mini)

Thanks for the photo-reorientation shortrackskater! They were all vertical orientation from phone to drive album, and then I couldn't quite figure out the attachment option for righting them back  :Scratch-Head:
Thanks also for the welcome, and any help along the way. I'm a long time EM early pinball guy, mostly focused on one-ball payout games from the 1930's-50's. Recently picked up some Bally EM slots, a Jennings 400  :banghead:, a Buckley Pointmaker, and couple E-series Ballys that I brought back from the dead. Fun stuff, and this forum is clearly a braintrust.  :hail:

You're welcome.
For photos, sometimes the phone's photo meta-data retains the original portrait or landscape orientation. Usually you can just edit and flip the photos 360 degrees and it transfers here fine. I use an iPhone and airdrop to my MacBook and have no problem.

Can you re-shoot photo #1 showing what side of the machine that's on? I just need a wider shot. My manual is for slightly older models but it still may be a similar mechanism.

Many thanks again. The area in question is the right side of the machine. There is also a spring with "S" retainer that must attach to it in some fashion as that was relaxing without any particular job to do (visible in earlier photos).
I'll give this photo upload another shot- no guarantees they fly straight. They were all shot same orientation, and appear upright in my local drive, and cloud folder, so, well, let's see...

Congrats! Beautiful looking machine. I have some books I can look through some books I have tomorrow.

This is fairly close. You can see it's a shoulder bolt that was broken or sheared off.

You beat me to it. Took the photo but I couldn’t get it to post because of file size

Looks good! I removed the duplicate photo.
We must have the same Pace manual from the Meads!
Yours is a better shot. Mines's a bit dirty but this should get him started.

Thanks much shortrackskater & 702collector! Ideally I can locate that part, and if need be I should be able to fabricate a reasonable facsimile. :stirthepot: I'd prefer option 1!

 SeaBiscuit,

702collector & shortrackskater, got it.  It's the operating lever stop.  Here is a better photo of one from a game I did a few years ago.

You can do a WTB post on the coin op collectors forum.  Someone should have one.

Thanks much for the additional photo 63mini. Greater clarity, and even if one doesn't turn up, I could likely fabricate one that's work in a pinch. I'll use that pic in my WTB post. I'm guessing the wiring issue shouldn't be too much of a challenge with a counter, and candle payouts, and honestly, I doubt I'd be able to source any specific documents for that Harolds Club setup. I am guessing this machine is somewhere circa 1960-61?

Attempted to register at coin op collectors forum but ran into the double secrete reg-confirm wall: :banghead: "Russians are still trying to create false users. Until they go away you need to know a special number to register which is only available from existing members.: This question is a means of preventing automated form submissions by spambots."
Needless to say I did not possess the right credentials. :talktothehand:

Not sure if I’m allowed to tell you the secret code but I’m going to find it in the forum and point you in the general direction. Pretty sure it’s under “new members” or “welcome” or “read this first” or something like that

SeaBiscuit,

Yes, I doubt you will find a schematic for the wiring.  I believe the cases were made by a third-party company such as Baldecci and sold to the Casinos.  The slot techs would convert the older Pace, Mills or Jennings machines to these new cabinets, and they would add top lights, meters or other options in house.  These conversions were done to allow easy service of the games from the front instead of the back.

As you stated. It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out the wiring.  Your date is probably pretty close maybe even into the mid 60's.  Although the mechanism itself is probably earlier.

Thanks 702 collector. I didn't want to resort to drilling out the lock! :Tongue_Out:

Also thanks 63mini for the added insight!

My parents have three Mills from ‘62 ‘63 only electrical is for fluorescent lights, candles and bell. The candles only have lights for change and jackpots.

Thanks 63mini- got it, however I have to wait now as I previously max'd my number of registration attempts. Imagining I'm on a list of suspected Russian bots now... :duh:

702 collector, this Pace is likely as simple, although the bell is missing. I can fix that in a jiffy.

Shortrackskater yes same book. I think the owners pictorial guides are some of the best resources out there. Second in line to all the great guys on NLG of course. The only one I can’t get my hands on is the Bally one. I just can’t justify the price some of the resellers are asking for it. I can buy another slot for what some of them want.

Try contacting Mead directly. The web site shows the Pace manual out of print, but shoot them an E mail. I did, for the Jennings (out of stock last year) and they found 3 on a shelf!

That one is actually based on a Mills mech.

Appreciate the info 702collector & 63mini. I went through my Pace mechanism, cleaned oiled, synthetic grease, etc. It's working very well now. I'm confident that operating lever stop will show up here eventually, although I'm not sure what precisely it's function is...other than it's name!

I believe it has something to do with cycling the machine without putting a coin in it. I’m not positive on that but I’m pretty sure someone with more knowledge will chime in.
