Addendum to power supply sticky
« on: March 20, 2023, 04:05:26 PM »
I just did two machines and I noticed a little difference between a Dotmation and a 401.

The instructions were great, but it only briefly mentions the orange wire with the red stripe at pin 12 on the Williams harness. I missed connecting that orange wire to the +5vdc on the ATX supply on both machines. On the Dotmation, it didn’t matter, the machine works great. On the 401 though, I needed that orange wire connected to the other reds for the machine to work at all. Before changing it, I would get the bong, but no other signs of life, even though I had all 5 leds lit.

I also noticed that the OEM power supply’s are slightly different between the two models. The molex connectors for the big transformer are different, the 401 has 4 less pins.

I think you mean Dotmation and a 400.  401 is a dotmation.  There were minor differences between all units over the years, power supplies, boards, etc may differ.  Some parts may have incompatibility issues.
It's not that dotmations themselves vary from non-dotmation, they're typically the same machine (with dotmation having extra components obviously).  Good observation though with the ATX conversion!
