Title: Chip Reader/Burner
Post by: therockinelvis on March 25, 2020, 05:04:23 PM
I would like to get a Burner/Reader that is easy to learn and use. Backup my SB files. Any suggestions?

I had always used the USB GQ4X from mcumall.  Works with a lot of chips, but needs adapters for a lot of the newer stuff.  I now use TL866II Plus since it can also do firmware hubs.  It will do all IGT i960 pltatform eproms without adapters.

I also use the TL866II Plus.  I love it.  :I_agree_1:

I got this one because I work with Aristocrat and the others were too small for 32 pin eproms without an adapter. I really like this one except for the non-US power supply required a wall wart adapter/convertor.

I started with a Batronix but it was only good up to 24 pins and Batronix told me there was no adapter available? Maybe their software was lacking.

I'm sure they all work the same no matter the brand...

I see some of the
TL866II Plus Programmer have several adaptors. Do I need the adaptors for IGT chips?

No adapter needed to do IGT chips.
If you plan on backing up the small square bios chips like the ones in a Reel Touch top box you will need an adapter.

Google the one you are looking at and the software is probably available for download...

I've been using the GQ-4X for over a dozen years now, hooked up to my old trusty Windows XP desktop tower.
The XP OS tower also has the older CF flash card reader slot for Vision lcd topbox cards and  works fine for the WMS BB1,2,and 3 CF cards.
It doesn't corrupt the files on the cards like Windows 8 and newer OS's does.
The only drawback is that it's slower downloading speeds to chips than the newer programmers but I've learned to live with that easily enough.
I've heard there's newer , faster ones but I'm satisfied with this one.
I got mine from MCUMall for about $120 bucks back then with the adapter for the SB chips.
Worth every penny and feel like I have gotten my money's worth over the years for sure.

I use the GQ-4X4 and have had no problems with it. I also got mine from MCUMall for about $120 bucks and came with several adapters.

I'm seeing
TL866II Plus on EBay for around $50.00 including shipping. And in USA. I won't mess with China

I will also recommend the TL866II Plus. I have one and the gq-4x4 as well. There is some non overlap between them so I need both devices for the things I repair.

You can't get a better value than the TL866II Plus...

That is what I went with.  Took a while to figure it out.  Qbert gave me terrific phone support
