Title: DSS Simm with Game King 4.3
Post by: Nurbo on May 01, 2023, 12:31:46 PM
Hello,

Do you think it's possible to use a DSS Simm instead the SND chips ?

The reason is that I don't have a sound board with chips socket.

Thanks ! :cool_thumb_up:

I've done it successfully on a couple of older games with EPROM based sound, and also tried it unsuccessfully too.  You can read the ERPOM files and create a large single file, then burn that to a DSS SIMM card.  If the game software doesn't perform a checksum test on the sound it will pass and work.  If it does then it will fail the checksum (because of the additional empty space on the flash card) and throw an error message.  So give it a shot and see what happens.

Actually, I believe DSS00156 or DSS00334 will work also.

I have them too but shipping to France would probably be 3 times the cost of the board.

Thank you all for your answers, I will test.

Right Ron, the shipping costs are going to be prohibitive  :bawling:

To add to this One eprom is all even bytes and one is all odd bytes. (Same goes for gme files and pxl eproms) once the files are joined properly the last 4 bytes should be the checksum for the file. I have never ran into any issues with extra space causing issues but thats not to say it cant happen. I have converted quite a few eprom sound files to simm. Most the time you won’t have the option to adjust the volume for the sounds stored in the simm. Half the time they were stuck extremely quiet or extremely loud.
