MK6 vs MK7 ?
« on: February 19, 2023, 09:38:59 AM »
I've searched the threads and am still confused. Is a MK7 much harder to change games? Or am I better off with a MK6 with dual screens?  I would like to change out a half dozen different games. Give me your thoughts. Thanks, KAD

MK6 is is MUCH harder to change games than MK7.With MK6 if one of the settings is wrong it wont let you ram clear it.
Also MK6 uses eproms instead of one cf card and simm. The blank eproms are expensive and getting hard to find.Plus you need a eprom programmer that can do 42 pin eproms.
The one advantage of MK6 over MK7 is the MK6 machine will be much cheaper to buy.You can have a cheaper MK7 machine by converting a MK6 into a MK7 with the conversion kit.Pretty easy to install and works well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks laneman, Do you think games like Pompeii ,Whales of Cash, Sun and Moon , Queen of Atlantis are available? Is an MK7 the same as a Viridian?  Thanks, KAD

Also what are your thoughts on a wide screen? Is the software different. Thanks.

Viridian is just another name for a MK7/GEN7.

Widescreen machines are A LOT more expensive than a narrow (19").
You can install a widescreen carrier board in a narrow machine and it will run most but not all widescreen software.

All those titles you mentioned are still available.

Youre welcome,glad I could help.
Aristocrat makes a lot of fun games.Lightning Links/Dragon Links are still some of the most popular games in the casinos.

I have both MK6 and MK7...
To be honest I haven't touched my MK6 in a long time. I'm pretty infatuated with the MK7 right at the moment.

For the older games the MK6 is going to be easier on your wallet.
The games you mentioned are older games. [Pompeii ,Whales of Cash, Sun and Moon , Queen of Atlantis]
If you get a 'normal' MK6 cabinet with a single screen and you swap out games the curtains will not match the drapes unless you buy lots of different top and belly plexi/glass, in case that bothers you. I have a go to Set Chip version 06.03.04 that has failed me only once or twice.

The MK6 is more difficult to find the correct settings to set up software. I have pulled my hair out because I didn't know the correct Game Type. Once I got over that obstacle I was off to the races. Also Justin cracked the 'code of silence' and we can now run TITO on the MK6 cabinets. [as well as the MK7 cabinet]

If you get a MK7 [narrow] cabinet you should be able to also find those games you mentioned but being a dual screen cabinet only the belly slick or sticker will not match. There are 'generic' belly slicks out in the wild.

I have a MK7 wide screen cabinet and have access to playing a lot of the newer games. My rotation at the present time are Lightning Link games, Wild Lepre'coins, Silverwolf. The newer MK7 software alone can cost as much as a complete MK6 cabinet. I have a couple of versions of Buffalo. There are some updated versions of Whales and Pompeii available.

I do have to warn you to do your homework buying software. Some games will not play well with my 'stock' Viridian cabinet. Generally anything I see for MK6 will play on my MK6. [I'm talking US software, I have not figured out NSW software] I have MK7 software that requires a specific monitor [resolution or size] or cabinet, ARC, ARC Double, MarsX, EdgeX, I can easily get confused. Newer software requires more hardware like a Vertex controller. Helix software can come on a CFast card and you need to make it work on your MK7 which runs CF cards. 2 different animals.

With the newer games it is pretty easy to set up the software. There is usually just one choice for Game Type. I have struggled with the older games finding the correct Game Type. When I first got my MK7 I struggled with the correct set chip version. My go to MK7 Set Chip 7.02.69.03 does not play well with the older software I had.

I could probably have bought 5 or 6 MK6 cabinets for what it cost me for my single MK7 cabinet and some software. I don't regret the MK7 purchases for a minute. As for which platform is better, which of your kids do you like better???

Hey Rich...
If you are running MK6 software on a dual screen MK6 cabinet what is displayed on the top screen with normal MK6 software?
I'm thinking there are only a few games that use both screens, Mr Woo, Outback Jack, Zorro??? Otherwise the top screen is blank?

Thanks a lot for the info. I think I'm leaning toward the MK7 now. They will play lightning link, right? That's on a wide or narrow screen?

I'm running Lightning Links on my WS Viridian...
I'll let Rich check in, I believe he said they play on a Narrow screen as well? I reserve the right to be WRONG, again...
Personal opinion, I like the look of WS software on a Wide Screen cabinet...

Most but not all Lightning Links will play on a narrow machine with a widescreen board installed.
There are some versions that will give you a "top screen disconnected" error because the software is looking for a widescreen top monitor. Those you must run in a widescreen machine or you can take a widescreen PC monitor and connect that to it.You place that monitor on top of the machine or find a way to mount it in front of the machines narrow screen.

I agree with Greg..They look better with the widescreen machine.
If you can afford it go with the widescreen machine.

Is there anything negative about a slant top? I found an MK7 wide screen slant top for $2850 as compared to a wide screen upright at $4000.

I dont think I ever saw a mk7 widescreen slant top.Can you post a picture of it?

Forgot to tell you....if you plan on buying any Lightning Link software....IF you can find it going to be expensive.

It's personal preference but I don't like slant cabinets...
I've got a split level and couldn't get one in the house if I wanted to...

MK7 Takes it in my opinion. Easier to work with, great game selections, and just better looking all around ! Especially if you get a widescreen version. They have some cool lights on the sides. Just my 2 cents.  :cool_thumb_up:
