Igt s + reels jerking
« on: June 04, 2023, 06:24:41 AM »
IGT S+ Red white and blue star is wild.
Replaced mpu and transformer now when it starts up all three reels jerk. I either get error code 41,42,43. Tried resetting by pushing white button, opening  door.

What SP chip are you using and does your MPU have the small blue potentiometer volume dial on top of it?
You might have a 16Mhz MPU when your SP is made for a 10Mhz MPU board.

The MPU's with the blue volume dial are 10 Mhz boards.

or

You put the chips in the sockets and bent a leg underneath the chip's body.

Semi newbie here, what is sp?

SP is referring to the RAM chip that is in the "Game Prom" socket on the MB.  It should be labelled SPxxxx (x's indicate the specific game it's running).  The chip next to in socket labelled "Reel Prom" is the SS chip.  It also has relevant numbers (SSxxxx).  The two work in pairs.

41, 42, 43 errors indicate that you have a reel tilt.
 41 = reel 1, 42 = reel 2 etc.

This can be caused by bad reel optics .... Given that you know that they work fine with your other board we can rule that out. It is also uncommon that all three act up at the same time.

In the top left hand corner of your MPU board you will see a bank of 5 resistors - each correspond to one of the reels. Typically 3 look a bit scorched and the other 2 look pristine. The S+ can be a 5 reel machine, rare to see anything other than a 3 reel in North America. Thus 5 resistors.
Compare the two boards and see if the one giving you errors is worse than the other.

If the resistors are at issue - move the ones from spot 4/5 to the bad ones. Or order some new.  Clearing a reel tilt

Why are you changing boards ??

I changed boards because old battery leaked causing a short somewhere in the board.i changed the battery on old board and it drained within 2 weeks. So your saying the resistors on all 3 reels are bad?

It’s One possibility ….

Not sure where you got your new-to-you board, or washer condition it’s in.
There is also a reel driver chip. That you might be able to swap between boards.
Others members will need to jump in here as I am not sure which one it is and/or if it’s socketed.

You had a 16Mhz MPU board and now have a 10Mhz board.
All I know offhand  is that the SP932 GAME PROM is a Type 1 chip.
I'm am NOT sure if it's designed for the 16Mhz board only or not, as I don't have that sheet of info available at the moment.
Maybe someone can verify that.
Your SP932 may or may not work well on both types of boards.

If your reels are still jerking, take a real good look at the first three/four legs on the Reel Prom SS chip.
The legs are NOT seated in the socket correctly.
The legs are touching more than one contact per leg in the socket.

Pull out the chip slowly and as straight or flat as possible.
Just gently work each end upwards a little at a time until it's easy to pull off flat.
Turn the chip upside down and use a pair of good tweeers to straighten all the pins as perfect as you can.
Then insert one entire row of legs, just sitting on top of the contacts.
Push the chip body towards the other row from the other side, and line up all the other pins to the socket contacts, then slowly push the chip body straight down flat.

The other thing I find weird about your new MPU, is that you have a blank crystal.
Normally, that silver crystal has black imprinted markings on it that say 10.00Mhz or 16.00Mhz on it.
I have never ever seen that crystal be blank like yours.

Can you show me a good photo of the entire board?
I think someone screwed with this board before you bought it.
Look carefully, there's another silver crystal near the AYxxx or SCNxxx sound chip that's next to a pair of 2-pin jumpers, and somewhat near the red  LED diode bulb.
It may have visible Mhz markings on it?
It should say 10.00Mhz like on my photo below...if they're different or incorrect, the mixed radio signal causes the reels to jerk or act wonky.

Click on any photo below to enlarge, if needed...>>>

The game chips (SP) are not the same between a 10mhz and a 16mhz.
The latter have all sorts of sound and volume options in them not present in the 10mhz version.

The reel chips (SS) generally are the same other than the speed of the chip that the software is written to.
The 16mhz set of chips conform to faster specs.
SOooo there is no problem with the faster chip going into a slower 10mhz board but trying to get the slower 10mhz chips to work in a 16mhz board can be a challenge.

Other than the unseated pin issue that Mark points out I suspect using the proper game chip for a 10mhz will probably fix you up.

You had a 16Mhz MPU board and now have a 10Mhz board.

Are we sure about that?

The PSR for SP932 makes no mention of it being designed for a 16MHz board.

I agree Knagl...I didn't get that from any PSR.
I was confused from the pictures on Reply #8.
I thought I was seeing a photo of his original board not having a volume pot.  :banghead:

I need to see good photos of entire boards....lol

I had a s+ with reel jerk and reel error codes. My problem was with the diodes in the corner of the main board. Replaced the diodes and all had been well since.

Good luck
