Title: CALL ATTENDANT - I called but no one came!
Post by: shortrackskater on August 08, 2016, 06:29:58 PM
My F2 was working yesterday. I flipped it on today and got a CALL ATTENDANT message on the screen. I checked the MPU battery - it's fine. I pulled out both top boards and reseated them, reseated chips. The funny thing is the music still plays every minute.
Ideas? Optics maybe? Well no... the "door open" light goes out when the door is closed.

Do you have the reset key for it?

yes
Nothing happened.

I know that the ram board has a switch, on/off I believe, but I don't remember how to use it
:Scratch-Head: .. Your best bet might be to reach out to badbaud here... He works at K-Lar with Larry Weber.. You could try calling there and talk to him or send him a PM here... There number is 702-363-9998, I believe his names Allen.. I'd hate to give you the wrong way to try that reset or CMOS switch and cause more damage..  :fryingpan: I have one in my garage that could use this done too because it's asking or says CMOS on the screen..

Is the reset key switch connected ?? I would check the wires at the back of it. Perhaps a wire fell off or the wires go no where.

When equipment is removed from the casinos often the player tracking electronics are literally ripped from the insides and sometimes other damages are not always seen.

Thanks Gary - I will check with badbaud.

Jay - Yes I used it with the test functions. Turning the key to the right enabled whatever was being tested. But it does turn left. For some reason I know I had checked that when I first got the machine but I'll dig in there and check again.

It's wired... well there's two wires to it. It was working before. When I bought it, it just needed a battery and there was a broken wire going to the CC... after that, it worked fine.
I'll PM badbaud... hope he's around!

There is a "reset" switch on the RAM board.
It is used to clear the RAM chip of any garbage.
The position it is at now is at non-clear, normal game operation.
All you have to do is turn the machine off then flip the switch to the other position and leave it there for about 3 minutes.
Then flip the switch back and turn the machine on.

You will probably get a CMOS error and turning the reset key switch will clear that.

Worse case you may have to remove the RAM chip from it's socket, lay its legs on some bare metal for a minute or so then plug it back into the socket.
Sounds like your original problem was caused by a dirty RAM chip socket. Removing it and plugging it back in will clean the contacts enough.

Does it matter if the MPU is pulled out of the machine when you do the reset switch? I have a machine with a similar problem, but my cards graphics are not correct, and I also see a CMOS message on the screen.. The Ram chip you refer to is the one on the Ram board.. I tried flipping the switch, but not for as long as your saying.. Also my machine is missing the reset key, just wires hanging there, but thats a simple fix.. I did pull the MPU and cleaned and reseated all the chips and replaced a few small caps. Did the same on the I/O..

Is this the one? I tried the switch... no change. I removed that chip and layed it on metal, put it back in and still get the error.

Yea Mark that the switch, and since that's the ram board that it has to be the Ram chip.. I replaced about 4-6 small caps that were dead on my board, but no difference for me. Did you take the ram board off and clean the mounting header pins?

I by no means have any experience with this series of machines......

Just as an observation: If you flipped the switch, did you try turning on the machine. I am not too sure how flipping a switch to the off position and then back to the on position would help if the machine is off the whole time.

You might also try turning the machine on with the chip out. It may generate the CMOS error and then after the chip is replaced then go through some kind of reset.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gary and Jay
Yes I just tried both... same thing CALL ATTENDANT
I'll try cleaning the pins again.

UPDATE:
Cleaned the pins again, no change. But the strange thing is that intermittently it wouldn't go into the test screen. But when I flipped the switch off and on, and restarted the machine, I would be able to put it back in test mode. Also the attract music would return as well but still have the CALL ATTENDANT screen. I wonder if I just have a bad CMOS chip?

All the switch does is disconnect the RAM from the battery

Well it powers up and plays music and that's it. Nothing changed. Any other ideas?  :Scratch-Head:

The next suggestion would be to remove the 4 game chips near the RAM board, clean the pins with a pink eraser and re-insert to see if that helps.

The final suggestion would be to send the MPU board to Larry and I can look at it with a scope. 702-363-9998.

 :thank_you:

It's interesting that the attract music plays on - I hope it might be the game chips. I did wiggle everything but when I get home this afternoon, I'll pull them out and clean them.

Generally the sounds mean the machine has registered a win and is perhaps in a hand pay state waiting for the jackpot reset.

Turning the key switch WITH THE DOOR CLOSED should have cleared that.

I agree - but going back to my first conjecture - follow the wires from the key switch....
Continuity test of those wires.... etc

Clearing the RAM should have cleared the jackpot.

If the error (call attendant) persists after that it is something in the machine like a coin in stuck or a coin out stuck.

There was no jackpot. I just shut it off and went to bed the night before.
I'll look around for anything I missed. The key switch worked for the settings menu but I've never used it as a "reset" switch. Here's a shot of the wiring. I can check the switch as well.

The Fortune II that I had was a 2 way switch. It could be possible that your missing your reset wires to the switch.. Look at the back plane board for a place where a reset wire might connect too..

If it was just shut off the night before. Check that there are no coins loose/wedged under the boards.

On our tester we also have a cursor advance button that needs to be pressed to get the game back after a RAM clear.

I followed the key switch wires to connector J7b on the mother board. Nothing looks unusual. It's still singing to me! And I can still scroll through the self test menu using the key switch - and yes I have a cursor advance button and it is working.

UPDATE:
Since I could test settings when I keyed forward, I switched the two wires on the reset  key, to see if it would reset... but nope!

I removed the four game chips again, and wiggled/re-seated the other IC's in sockets,  on my MPU board and still have CALL ATTENDANT. If it's most likely the MPU board, I'm wondering if I'm better off just putting a WTB for one? I can call Larry too but last time he was extremely busy.

Larry does answer a lot of phone calls and help a lot pf people fix their problems over the phone. I once heard him go on for over an hour trying to describe to a nube where to put the sense coin in a coin comparator. He always calls back any customer who leaves a message.
I do the board repairs so once you set it up with Larry the board comes directly to my bench.

Waiting for the call back from Larry. We did speak for awhile on the phone, but he said he'd call back. Great guy!
In the meantime...
I've checked all the plugs on the mother board, checked all IC's, etc...
STILL getting "CALL ATTENDANT" yet the game idle music plays away.
I'd love to just swap the MPU board out but I don't have a spare. I'll post in the WTB while I wait. I've combed through the manual but, oddly, there's no troubleshooting errors section in the manual I have.
If anyone else  has ideas... please feel free to share.

Mark,

I have 2 or 3 sets of F2 boards but I don't know if any were working. I saved them from machines that were too far gone to save. There is not much for trouble shooting in any manual I've seen or found on these. Mostly trial by fire...

Can anyone with an F2 check their wiring from the reset switch to the connector on the mother board? I'd like to know the wire colors and location of where they attach on the keyswitch. It still seems like a reset issue.
