Title: Looking into becoming an Aristocrat owner
Post by: Rane420 on February 20, 2017, 10:37:24 AM
Hello all, I just can't seem to shake the bug to get a Miss Kitty up and going.

That said, the extent of my Aristocrat knowledge is limited to the fact that there are several titles I like in the casino. Before I take the plunge, I have a few questions I'm hoping the local experts could help answer.

1.  In order to play games like Miss Kitty, More Chilli's and Buffalo what kind of cabinet would I be looking for?  It seems like it would be MK6 or Viridian

2. I know pricing is a local consideration, but are there any ballpark price ranges I could expect to pay?  I'm sure this would be too new and outside my price point, but the Wonder Four with Panda, Miss Kitty, Wicked Winnings and Miss Kitty would be the ultimate for me so, if there are any estimates around that I'd love to hear them as well.

3. Are the games somewhat easy to swap?  As a frame of reference,  I'd consider WMS BB1/2 swap pretty easy, IGT a little more complex because of pulling chip sets.

4.  I don't see as much talk about the Aristocrat machines as I do WMS and IGT.  Are there any gotcha's around the Aristocrat machines I should consider?  It is altogether possible it is merely my perception as I have WMS and IGT machines and can relate to and remember those posts more.

I appreciate any feedback I can get. Once I'm armed with a bit more knowledge I will hit up the WTB section, unless of course I get scared off.

Aristocrats are not very popular in the home market.  I myself have been looking to get a Widescreen Viridian cabinet, but the price has always deterred me, plus software availability is not all there.  You can see just in general that even in casinos, you will probably find a handful of viridian machines running as compared to say WMS, Bally, IGT of which you see quite a lot.  I really love the Sky Rider series and it's basically the only reason I would get an Aristocrat.  I also like the Moon Maidens and Storm Queen series.  All these are Viridian Widescreen cabinet games.

For what it's worth, most of the time I've been told to stay away from them.  But if I can source a nice cabinet with a good set of spares, I would probably get one.

Thanks Rick, I wonder if they are prone to problems and that is why you were told to steer clear or if it is more of a parts availability issue.  I had forgotten about Sky Rider being Aristocrat, that would be another great title.  Although, I suspect it and the Wonder 4 games will be outside the range of my pocket book :-)

Hi Rane!

The most software is available for MK6. I think Viridian would be difficult, but I am not very well informed in the Viridian world :)

If you're looking for miss Kitty, Buffalo, 100 lions and tons of titles like that, I would surely go for an MK6!

Cheers!

Thanks Eldee99.  Do you happen to have any insight on how difficult game swaps are for this platform?

Hi Rane,

Yes, I do it all the time :)

There are 6 EPROM sockets on the mainboard, where the game EPROMS (M27V322) fit in. Every (original) EPROM has a number (U86, U73, U85, U72, U84, U71), they need to be placed in the corresponding socket. There are tons of games available on the Internet. These games can be burned on an EPROM by yourself. I do this with an EPROM burner (I use a Willems EPROM Programmer GQ-4X, with the correct adapter board for M27V322 chips). Most games are 4 chips of 4MB. Some games are larger and they could need an expansion board. But it's just one or two games that need this (outback jack is one).

If you download the files, mostly they come with an extension like .U86, so you know what the chip number will be.
Sometimes they have an extension like .001. In that case:

.001 = U86
.002 = U73
.003 = U85
.004 = U72
.005 = U84
.006 = U71

Empty Chips can be found on ebay or alibaba.

After inserting a new game, you can boot up the machine. Then a lot of alarms will ring, so you need to set up the machine. This can be done in the operator menu (by turning the operator key).
For US games, an additional set-chip program needs to be run first. This uses two additional chips that need to be put on the mainboard in a riser board. OZ games don't use these (annoying) set chips.

By the way, if you want to run OZ games (the majority of them found on the Inet are), you need a "LAB Communication board". This board is placed in the most right socket under the mainboard.
So if you are going to look for an MK6 machine, make sure it has a LAB board. If not, no worries, they are not expensive.

It's not too bad to change the games, it takes about 5 minutes I guess.

Just look on the Internet for MK6 Aristocrat MAME games. You will find them easily.

Good luck, and feel free to ask questions. I've figured a lot out by myself and by this forum. I know it's quite tricky stuff, so I would be happy to help.
