Title: WMS 400 game conversion
Post by: Terps on August 19, 2017, 06:33:45 PM
Can someone provide a list of items I need to convert games on a WMS 400 machine. Looking to convert from Triple Treat to Reel em In. 16".

I know I need glass, reel stripes, EPROMs (which ones? Can someone list both 3 coin and 2 coin). I believe there are 5 different  chips? Clear chip? I have never done before and really need in detail each chip number and what each one does and how to do it.  Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know the part numbers for the chips (eproms) for the Reel 'Em In game you want to convert to. But ordinarily the game eproms are obtained as a set and you just ask for them by game name (Reel 'Em In) and by max coin in (usually 2 coin or 3 coin or 5 coin). There are sub-variations to the game software for higher and lower player payback percentages, so you may get some choices on that. Someone may have a set of 3 coin Reel 'Em In with 88% payback and a different set with 97% player payback. Williams made different versions of software for the same game because some casinos wanted different player payback levels. The higher the percentage number the more the machine pays out over the long term. In actual use for a home owner you won't see a lot of difference.

Since it is an older game and the glass could be difficult to find I'd suggest you get the glass first, then get the game software that matches the glass for 2 coin, 3 coin, etc. The game software consists of 2 game chips and up to 4 sound chips, all are installed on the cpu board located in the card cage.

There is a blank place on the reel glass for a sticker that shows the coin denom (quarter, nickel, etc) so the reel glass is the same for all denominations. And the reel strips will be the same, doesn't matter which coin denomination or max coin version of the machine. You will also need a special Williams CLEAR chip when you do the game change. You install the chip and it will "format" your machine so that everything knows you've done a game change and it sets up the specific coin denomination you want to use. This CLEAR chip comes in different versions for the different coin denominations, so get the one that is for whatever denomination you intend to use. Quarter is the most popular but it is easier if you stick with whatever coin your hopper is already setup for.

Here's an example of the Williams (WMS) CLEAR chip used on the model 40x machines. Someone here at NLG may have it available, you can post a WTB if you need one:

Thank you for the detailed response. Is there a source which shows the EPROMs needed for each specific game and sound (Reel em in). I can post a WTB , but would need specifics to post.  Thanks again for the help.

If you mean what is the part number for the blank eprom used to hold the game software then yes that is listed in the WMS-40X service manual. The eproms used for the game software are 20C010, 27C040 and 27C080 (or the equivalent). The 27C080 is not listed in the chart below but some of the WMS-40X games that have a lot of sound effects require the 27C080 because it is a larger storage size chip, holds more software data than the other eproms. The chips you'd be concerned with would be game & data chips XU2, XU3, and sound chips XU17, XU18, XU30 and XU31. On some games they didn't use all 4 sound chips, so Reel 'Em In might only have 2 or 3 sound chips.

If you mean you want part numbers for the programmed chips then there isn't a source or list of the game software by part number that I have seen published but it could be out there and I just haven't seen it. Some of the other folks here that are familiar with the WMS-40x games may know more about it. If I needed software for the game I'd have to just ask if anyone has game software for Reel 'Em In, tell them if I needed 2 coin or 3 coin or 5 coin. When they responded I'd then ask about the different player payback percentage versions they might have to choose from.

When you see photos of the original WMS-40x game software chips there are labels on them with the Williams part numbers so I know they exist. Hobbyists that focus on the WMS-40x machines may have made a list of the game software with the part numbers, playback percentages, etc that they have written down over time. In the WMS-40x service manual parts section it just says to order the game software chips by game name (see the chart above, right hand column). Probably when a casino ordered the game software they'd call up their Williams rep and tell them the game software they needed, then he'd ask which version according to payback percentage and max coin that the casino wanted. There probably was a list somewhere in a document from Williams with all the WMS-40x game software they released, but I haven't run across it.

Here's an example of some Williams software chips with original labels. It isn't a very clear photo, only one I could find right now (these chips might be for the WMS-550 model, which is similar in some ways to the WMS-40x models):
