Title: Flintstones Topper
Post by: therockinelvis on February 15, 2016, 10:20:48 AM
I have had this Video Topper for several years. It is made by Simtech and is really cool. It runs on 12vdc and uses a camera simm card. I need one or more of the Super Geniuses to help me figure a way to get sound from it. I didn't find any audio on it anywhere, so I'm guessing a different player maybe. It only has a ground wire and a power cable for 12vdc. It has a video cable like Bally alpha computer. Check out the pictures and let me know what you think.  Here's a short video of it.

I think the first step would be to figure out whats on the SD card.
If the file has Audio in it - then we deal with Hardware.
If the file has no sound then we see if using a file with sound plays...

Can you take the SD card and play it on your PC ?

I'm not really that concerned about that SD card. I know there is no place to plug in audio. I can always record another video clip of Flintstones or play Elvis, or any other clips on it. I don't even know what company produced a Flintstones Slot. I just checked, it is a Williams. I cannot find another topper like this. It would be nice on top of my Flintstones pinball.  I am hoping the black box in picture 1 can be replaced with one that has sound capability.

I've seen some picture or photo frames that let you plug in an SD card to show video or slide photographs, if there was one that also played audio that might be a way to do what you want. You could connect the audio out of it to a louder sound amp or to the one in the pinball machine.

Looks like it was made in Australia. Sent them a message. Maybe they will respond.

Its possible that the topper has internal speakers but the video clip doesn't have sound. Its also very possible that there is 2 or 3 pins that will output sound to an amplified set of speakers. Much like you would use for a PC.

So you need to determine if there is sound in the clip, and if you know the video format that the topper uses - plug in a video with sound and see if you can find some sound output...

I took it apart and there are no speakers or jack in it. It has only 3 wires going to it. red and black for 12vdc and green ground. The small black box in picture 1 has a video cable going to the monitor like the center one in this picture with the 2 silver screw connectors. This is not the wiring for the topper but a picture I had of similar video cable.

I would then suggest that your hardware doesn't have sound capability.  If you want sound - then you need another device that can output composite video in addition to sound.

The cheapest option would probably be a walmart DVD player. Burn whatever video you want to DVD - put it in continuous loop and away you go. You might even find a Hanna Barbarah Flintstone DVD and you could play every episode known. If you want small you could probably do the same with an IPOD. Lots of those used on Fleabay.

You could also get a digital picture frame - sized the same as the current monitor and replace it with that. They usually support sound.

It is unlikely that your topper is for the Flintstone machine by WMS as that particular slot is very new, and since you mentioned you have had the topper for several years, and the topper doesn't match the cabinet type used for that game.  It is likely an earlier Flintstone machine.  I am unaware who would have made that though.  Also keep in mind that toppers usually have no sound with the videos they play.

The date on it is 2012. It is shaped like a boulder. I searched the internet and found no pictures of mine and the machines I found had dual screen monitors.  I just received a message from the manufacturer and was told to take it farther apart as it does have audio left and right RCA jacks next to the VGA port. Can't wait to take it apart again. About 20 little screws to remove.

From what I read Simtech is an Australian company that makes custom signs and displays with video and sound for casinos and clubs, including slot machine progressive displays and toppers. They are a fairly large company mainly present in the Asian and nearby areas.

Here is one of their products for an IGT display, it was sold at an auction in Australia:

Barry, I got it off EBay 2 years ago and have been sitting on it. Just found it again today. I paid $150 plus shipping. So around 200 total. The only one I've ever seen. Can't remember who I got it from or what state. It was made in Sept. 2012 so it is only 3 1/2 years old. Did not look like it was ever installed. Shipping broke a small orb that covers the SB card.

Maybe you can tell me how to get sound from it. This SD card has maybe 6 different 30 second clips then loops. Is there something that triggers the video when on the machine? Can you post a video to youtube of your machine in action? Where are you located and what do you sell these machines for?
