Title: Buyer beware
Post by: Op-Bell on March 15, 2014, 01:24:26 AM
Just spotted this on Ebay. It's very pretty - pity it's a fake.

That too, Joey. The whole cabinet and door. I just pointed out the hinge as the most instantly recognizable part. Bally didn't make this style cabinet until about 1970. They kept making 742As into the 1970s, but even if this was born as a 742A, it's a late model relaminated and given a fake front belly glass. The description practically admits it's a fake, though amusingly, the person listing it seems unaware of the contradictions.

Quote
"This is one of the first of the original electro-mechanical series manufactured, there where only a few hundred of this white sides series made before being replaced with the standard wood grain laminate side models."
The side plate shows it has a serial number in the three thousands.

This model has a 110 VAC, 50 VAC & 6 VAC transformer and circuitry.

The original was a 742, not a 742A, and it didn't have a transformer because all the electrics were straight 110V. It was the change to 50V that accounted for the 'A'.

The owner of a genuine White Sides would also know better than to list it at $1950. The low price alone is evidence that this guy knows he's committing fraud.
