Title: Bally EVO to Alpha Conversion...
Post by: Ash100 on December 05, 2023, 05:27:02 AM
I recently received 2 Bally EVO machines, Video only, no Reels.

Neither one will Boot, nothing on the CRT other than "No Signal"

Both have clean looking MPUs, and the Suitcase in each one seems clean.

I changed the MPU Battery but don't have the correct one for the Suitcase. Plus, neither machine came with the Discs for the Drive.

So, my thoughts were this...What is needed to do the Alpha Conversion on the EVO besides the MPU and appropriate software?

Does the Suitcase get eliminated, or is it still required?

I'd prefer the Alpha over the original if it means I won't have to find obsolete software,  or if my MPUs are both shot, I'd rather just find a working Alpha Conversion MPU instead of the EVO versions.

Hopefully someone can answer this for me.

Thanks,

I wouldn't do the conversion. better to find an alpha parts complete.  see pic.  what are the themes you need CDs for? I have some, but would have to find them. sometimes easier said than done.

Thanks,
Wayne

Thanks for the quick reply.

Attached are photos of the MPU EPROMS and the Award Glass. Both machines are identical.

Seems there's more to the conversion than I realized. So, hopefully I can get at least one of these games up and running again.

I have no idea if this will help but here's the massive thread on my EVO repair. I eventually sold the dang thing once it was working. I just didn't want to deal with the trauma of troubleshooting all its oddball issues.

ShortTrackSkater,

Yours was one of the first posts I read, as well as every other one in this Forum. I can certainly understand the frustration that comes along with repairing a machine that you're totally unfamiliar with. I do appreciate your step by step play on the troubleshooting and maintenance of the machine.

That's one of the primary reasons I asked about maybe just doing an Alpha conversion, but it seems that it's not recommended.

I would like to get one of my 2 operational just to say I've done it, so I'm hoping that I'm able to locate everything I need to do so.

It will most likely be a back burner project, as there's a lot of other games to get refurbished and a few customers Games needing work. But I'll keep watching this forum and reaching out to members that contributed to your success. I had some good conversations with Vincent Tyler yesterday about these things and he shed some light on some of the problems I'm having.  I'll probably email Ted before it's all over with too. Lol.

Thanks for your reply.

Glad it helped! I don't think I'll ever take on a project like that again, but it was a fun game to play once it came to life.
Sadly member Cowboygames (Rob) has vanished for years and won't respond to messages. He was a senior member, both sites with 127 pages of help he offered here. I'm assuming he may have died but I have no way of knowing.  :Scratch-Head:

Unfortunately I didn't find that cd. If I do find it, I'll let you know. Hopefully someone here has the one for yours.  I did find the ones in the attached pictures.

Thanks,
Wayne
