Recommendations for How to Best Refurbish Bally Coin Hopper
« on: August 02, 2024, 03:25:35 PM »
I got some parts to add coin handling to my Bally Alpha s9000. I'd welcome recommendations for how to best refurbish the coin hopper and coin panel, e.g., clean, lubricate, etc. before I start to install these parts. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I think the most important thing is just inspect the hopper. Blow out any dust, and check for anything WEIRD inside it. Stored hoppers tend to be "receivers" off odd thing... nails, screws, and other stuff that just falls in to the bowl.
Here's a post from the old site that may help:

Another item you need to check is the hopper.  Depending on the hopper type you get it may have something called
an agitator.  This is a 3 pointed (or sometimes 5 pointed) rubber star that "agitates" the coins as hopper
spins so that they line up into the slot of the wheel that pushes the coins out.
See photo here.
http://www.newlifegames.net/newbie/agitator.jpg
This agitator disintegrates over time leaving a gooky black mess all over your coins/tokens.  Make sure your
agitator is in good condition and is not beginning to fall apart.  A good sign of a messed up agitator is
black gunk around the agitator.  If it does have this stuff, replace it now before all your coins turn black.
If your hopper is a holley wheel type, you do not have an agitator, you can tell it's a holley wheel hopper because
the wheel that spins where the coins go into have round holes in it. Typically if you have a $1 or higher
denominated slot, you will find this type of hopper.

Thanks for the advice; much appreciated. Any parts to lubricate with WD-40 or oil?

The regular WD-40 is actually of a solvent rather than a lubricant. I only use it to clean or unstick things... then I wipe it off.
If you ever need a lubricant, I'd stick with a good mineral oil. I've read not to use 3 in 1 due to some of the additives.
I'd just clean the hopper, install it and see it it works.
