soldering battery on bally s5500 and S6000
« on: November 09, 2022, 09:46:22 AM »
I see a lot of these boards that have been damaged when soldering batteries in place.  I think I read some where that you should only solder from one side of the board.  If that's true which side.
thanks
Bob

If I solder any battery on a board, I do it at the bottom.  I think the problems happen from inexperience: using the wrong iron and/or applying too much pressure. Cleaning the board beforehand is very important, as well.

The Bally 5500 and 6000 can be a problem especially if the battery has been changed a few times over it's life. I install a battery holder with leads and solder the leads to the ground test loop and positive lead to the battery jumper pins.

Hi Bob,
I've soldered hundreds without problems. I solder from the top, I used to take the board off of the tray to solder from the bottom, but have simplified it now.    a simple trick to make it easier is to clip the axial leads off the existing battery, apply a very little bit of paste to them, then solder the new leads to the old leads. this reduces the heat on the board. Lately I have been mounting battery holders to the front of the tray, and soldering the wires to the axial leads (that i cut the old battery from). this way the battery can be changed with the machine on.  I'll look for a picture.

Thanks,
Wayne

Definitely remove the board from the tray and do all of your soldering there. I get boards in where someone heated up the hole on the top and shoved the fresh battery lead into the hole
while the solder is hot. Normally this breaks off one tiny trace on the bottom side that has to be repaired.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

I forgot to specify that I soldered the battery holder without removing the MPU. The component side welds were fine so I didn't remove the MPU.

Here is a link to a "Solder Sucker" or desoldering pump. there are many different ones out there, but if you are doing repairs or battery changes, these will help to clean out the holes prior to replacing components.

I use a pt209 which works great , but couldn't find a link, it must be discontinued. same idea though.
I recap too many Bally Alpha monitors, the solder sucker is a must for those.

Thanks,
Wayne
