Title: WMS 4XX Winning Streak
Post by: 61Wally on March 07, 2022, 05:25:12 AM
Good Day to ALL. I recently modified my WMS machine with a computer power supply that “KNAGI” showed how to do. The machine was working great until I added some quarters to the hopper and one of them hit the J2 contacts of the hopper board. Now the machine has No deck lights, LED display, and the lights that are in the “Winning Streak” box. The florescent bulbs and the LED MATRIX box light up when turned on, then MATRIX box goes blank. One other thing when the quarter hit J2 pins the hopper started running and continuously runs. I checked the fuses and they are all good. (For some reason fuses are a joke on electronics, that I work on, They never blow!). Anyways I tested the board on the hopper and the 2 P&B Relays appear to be bad (open contacts when energized). Having No LED Display, I can’t see any errors. I have all my voltages on the cpu/mpu board. A bit stumped here. I ordered the relays for the hopper, but I’m not thinking that those going out would have anything to do with these other circuits. Maybe I’m wrong, but I could sure use any advice and assistance from  Your Incredible Members or Staff. Thank You So Much for Your time.
Dan

I’m SO SORRY MISTAKE on my part. The quarter hit J4 contacts, NOT J2.  (it was lodged in between the set of 2pins and the single pin next to it.

I believe those relays are solid state. You may not get a reading trying to test a meter across them. The top display has its own power supply and the game PCB  has a different supply. Inside the metal box in the bottom of the machine is a Linear supply separate from the Switching supply. Have you looked inside the metal box?

Thank You for responding. When I bypassed the +5,+12,-12 power supply on the bottom, I checked the top power supply and it was “MICKY MOUSED” in there. So I incorporated the computer power supply into the top as well. I tested voltages up top and they are present. I have +12 volts going to the Red wires and Ground on the black wires up top. What I would like to know is, does the large transformer have anything to do with this? If so does anyone know the schematic for this XFRMR?
On the relays, I tested them with/without a load on the contacts and I had NO continuity across the contacts. Is there an alternative way to test this type of relay?
One other note is the MPU board LED’s are all lit, showing all voltages present.
I noticed that 2 wires from XFRMR, (black & White) are going to the hopper connector, that’s why I’d like to rule out the transformer as well. Any thoughts? TU.

The top display is power hungry and that's why it had its own supply. The supply you installed may not have enough AMPs to power the display properly. The game will not boot until the top display has booted and passed it's test. As far as your solid state relay and transformer questions I would get the game to boot properly first and then see what the hopper is doing or not doing.
