Title: Volume
Post by: Cleobud on April 22, 2022, 06:18:01 AM
Have an S Plus with the green wheel volume control on the Mail board in the back.  The green volume wheel, when turned all the way to the right puts it at it’s lowest setting (almost silenced).  When I even slightly try and raise it up by dialing it left, it jumps extremely loud.  I thought maybe the green wheel needs cleaned with some contact cleaner or some other solvent.  Any advice?  Many thanks 😊

It should help...I use De-Oxit or CRC electronics cleaner....they come in spray cans.
You can find it :sherlock: at auto parts stores such as Autozone.
You can use this spray stuff on connector pins too.  :cool_thumb_up:

The metal slide inside the really cheap potentiometer dial is probably oxidized and contact isn't exactly the best as it works by resisting the ohms.
That's why the volume jumps from quiet-as-a-mouse to ear drum shattering sound....  :rotfl:

most volume wheels are blue, never saw a green one!, maybe it is the wrong value and that is why it raises the level so fast. I use alcohol to clean the volume control,  I believe the value is 10k .

I'm with Jim.  I think it's been replaced with one that is the wrong value, and 10k is the correct value for it.

Pulled out the board and it is blue.  When I initially looked, I saw the green board that rises slightly in front of the blue roll button and it was dark inside the cabinet. I’ll try the alcohol first and see how it goes.  Should I use something like a Qtip  and clean around the BLUE dial?  Thanks Jim

Try turning the knob all the way each direction a few times then use the coin in optics test button to adjust how loud it dings.
