IGT S Plus plays but no 7 segment displays work
« on: March 13, 2022, 06:22:10 PM »
Good evening.   I have an IGT S Plus upright machine that plays fine but there is nothing displayed on the 7 segment displays (coins played, winner paid, credit meter).  Any ideas on which connections to check?   Both connectors to the display board seem to be plugged in.  I have removed them and reseated them both.  Thanks for the help.

I was looking at the attached page from the service manual.   So I tried putting a known good MPU into the machine.   As soon as I turned it on the MPU board started smoking.  Q1 was fried.  Then I looked at the MPU board that was originally in the machine and realized it had similar damage.  From what I can tell, this is circuit that drives the bet max button light.  Any ideas on what to check next?

Does the Bet Max button have a LED light in it?  Some LEDs/socket combinations will cause a direct short from and fry things.  Usually it's the denomination LED that causes the most problems, but it's worth looking into.

No, it is not an LED bulb.

OK.  Well like you said Q1 drives the BET MAX lamp so there must be a short somewhere in that circuit in order to burn it up like that.  Check the switch wiring.

I had similar problems with my S+.  First have you checked the fuses?  I traced a bad "spin button" by a continuity test.  Use alligator clips on the MPU plug of the wires you have traced back from the switch (Probably Green/Green & Yellow/Black).  If you get a tone on your meter when you are depressing the switch, it is good.  Another suspect cause is the optic switch and optic switch receiver.  A third cause (epically if you have smoked a board) is loose coins under or behind the MPU or planeboard if the machine was laid on it's back during or before transport.  Good luck.
