So this is the first slot machine I've attempted, but I'm an EECS student at umich, and have experience building lots of similar things in this past, so I picked this up at a garage sale last week for cheap. Most of it works wonderfully, except when it pays. Most of the time it doesn't, but sometimes it does. I've had it pay on three plums before, but now it won't. I've even had it pay while reels were still spinning. Can anyone point me in the direction of any resources, or give any insight?

since you're an EE, can't tell ya too much or you wouldn't have any fun :-)
payout circuit is from wire 90 -> thru the reels and appropriate trace for the win amount on the payout counter unit -> payout relay coil
typical issues are:
1] cruddy reel wiper boards
2] misaligned wiper contacts on reel wiper board rivets
3] cruddy traces on payout counter disc
4] payout counter not resetting
5] could also be a cruddy/misadjusted switch on the wire 90 path going back to wire 30 or a poor plug connection.

That's an awkward typo, meant to put EECS, not just EE. I got some decent circuit knowledge, but I'm not a full electrical engineering student either. But thanks for all the information, it's all super useful. Also am I understanding this correctly? Each reel has a gear that isn't uniform, based off where they land, the wiper makes contact with the board closer or farther to the reel and based off of which contact the wiper is on the machine knows what the combination was?

As Wolftalk mentioned more than one unit can cause problems.
Best to start with the reel index arms, wiper, and wiper boards.
Inspect index arm roller, springs, and knee action.
Wiper arms should slide easily back and forth. Any sluggishness will be problematic.
Wiper blade contacts and receiver rivets need to be clean.

yup, the slot depth positioning the wipers defines what symbol the reel stopped on. The reel tape and tin needs to be mounted to match the slots.
take a look at the edge of a wiper and you'll see how sets of wiper fingers are connected together.
since the game pays left-to-right and right-to-left, the pathways thru the reel wipers are more complicated/confusing. When getting a handle on it, trace the path from wire 90 to a payout counter trace for a 4 symbol win like PL-PL-PL-PL.
there's many variations of the basic 847 game. A model/serial number plate on the cabinet below the handle will tell you if you have an 847 or an 847-x game - although sometimes the plate no longer matches the pieces someone stuffed into the cabinet.
also, the wire 20-1 circuit path thru the reels is just for ringing the bell and is a 6VAC circuit. It should never connect to the wire 90 paths, which are 50VAC.
if the reel diagram /schem isn't making sense, maybe look at a simple game schematic like a 742-A and it'll be more obvious.
the end effect is if you remove the reels from the machine and position the reels on a winning combo, you could use an ohmeter to verify an almost zero ohm circuit from wire 90 to whatever wire is supposed to feed the payout counter trace for the win. The plug charts and wire color chart on the schem will help figure out where to put the meter probes, and there is also a reel wiper diagram (w-1041-xxx file) if the wire colors are hard to tell.
if you have almost zero ohms from wire 90 to the pay wire on the reel plug, then a payout issue is not in the reels. Could be the plug connection to the cabinet tho.
