Hello, I'm new here
I picked up a IGT draw poker slant top it's a PE, a couple weeks ago and I'm having a problem.
I replaced the battery since that is what was told was wrong with it, and then it's been giving me a "EEPROM DATA FAILURE"
when I hit the reset button once the CLR chip is in, and when the game chip is in it gives me "call attendant eeprom data" message
not sure what to do next if anyone can help
thanks.

Yup, I've done all that... this goes beyond that tho I'm afraid...

With the door open, turn the reset key.
Close the door.
IF the error is still there, press the white test button a couple of times, turn key and close door.
Error should clear.

I did like you said and it only goes into a statistic menu with the turn of the reset key as in this video.

I noticed on the board there are 2 empty chip slots, a large one and a smaller 6-pin one... is there something missing?
-
my board has the big chip but not the small one, so i would say yes you are missing a chip.
-
The two videos come up as private and can't be watched.
-
Really? I Went To A Different Browser And Not Logged In To This Forum And See Them Fine... Hmmm
-
The larger missing chip is the DUART chip used for communication with the casino network.
Sounds like you might need the IVC006 EEPROM clear chip. This chip has been archived and included in MAME so you should be able to Google for MAME ICV006 and another choice key word to find it.
Burn it and run it and it should clear the EPROM data.
-
"Burn it and run it" Have no idea what that means...
-
Burn it and run it means:
Find the binary file on the internet, program a rom chip with said binary image. Turn the machine off and swap the rom chip in the program socket (AKA GMO at U68) in place the PE+ Poker Game PP0203 chip and turn on the machine. The program will come up and clear the eeprom chip. Turn the machine back off and swap in the original PP0203 chip and you need to go through the init routine of holding in the self-test button until you hear the tone. Close the door turn the Jackpot Reset key. Open the door and press the self-test button and set the machine as needed.

Well I'm not sure how to program a chip?
-
I would think you can buy another board and put it in, also.
-
Maybe a game chip is all I need?
-
Lets start at the beginning.
What you have is a PE+ superboard.
There are 7 chips that make up a game set.
MXO, MBO, MRO, MGO, CapXrom, Program Chip, Game Chip.
In the JPG that you posted you have all 7 chips in place.
The M' set of chips combined with the CapXrom manage the graphics - if you have the wrong chips you lose card backs, colors look funky etc. Perhaps symbols missing on the cards etc.... but the game still plays.
The Program Chip and the Game Chip determine the game. (ie Double Down Poker, Duces Wild, etc)
The other type of board that the PE+ can use is a NON-Superboard. These use only a gamechip and no seperate program chip. There are more variety in the superboard games, and the superboards have much better accounting -- required by the Nevada Gaming Board.
Beyond the game set there are two other chips that matter and these are CMOS chips. One of the CMOS chips lives on your MPU board (the picture you sent) and the other lives on the motherboard (that is the small built in board in which the MPU board plugs into).
The purpose of the CMOS chips is to maintain game integrity. If you were to lose power during a deal, or immediately after hitting a deal button but before the cards were dealt - the CMOS chips would capture this transaction. Both chips must be in harmony at all times. When the power is restored the game continues exactly where it left off.
Assuming you have multiple MPU boards - each with a different game. When you change MPU boards the CMOS on the motherboard and the MPU board are NOT in sync. Subsequently you get this or a smilar error, after doing a reset (which was described to you in earlier posts) the two chips are now in sync and the game plays.
If you change from a Superboard to a non-superboard or vice versa - the CMOS format is NOT the same between the two games and the CMOS needs to be reformatted. This happens automatically when you do a reset but you can almost be guarenteed you get this specific error.
I can see a couple of potential things going on:
1. Open your door and close your door. Do you get any messages on the screen such as DOOR OPEN, or DOOR CLOSE. If you do this is good. What I am concerned about is that you get the stats screen by turning the reset key when the door is open. This typically only happens when the door is closed. If you are not getting these messages we might want to check your door optics.
2. Have you pressed the white button multiple times - and go past all the menus to the end where it says RESET before going back to the main screen ? (if not try this).
3. Sometimes you get wonky behavior on your machine because a board has changed or something has corrupted the memory of the system. In which case you need to use a clear chip - this brings the machine back to factory settings. To use a clear chip you remove the game chip, put in the clear chip, put the board back in the system and follow the on-screen promots to clear the machine. Replace the clear chip with the game chip and its like the machine just came out of the factory.
If you do not have an Eprom burner you can buy both a PE+ Set Chip and a Clear Chip from April or one of the other vendors on our home page. If your getting one you best get both. The shipping typically costs more than the chips.
A Set Chip (used in the same manner as I described for the clear) is used to activate and program the bill validator.
4. I don't think there is anything wrong but you can probably pickup another MPU and game from the same vendor you get your set/clear chips from. Just so you have it on hand. Its better than swapping 7 chips at a time to play a different game.
BTW I get the same message about these being private videos as well.

I Double Checked YouTube... Yes, they were set on private... not sure why... but check them out... and I have 2 boards that yes, I did swap during the course of trial and error... so I will use only one board for this next few attempts... thanks for the update... I'll let you know what happens... Thanks again.

ok I used one board with the clr chip installed I get a pink screen with a "press selt test button" and it says "eeprom data failure" where do I go from here?
-
It's sounding like a bad EEPROM on the motherboard. The motherboard is the fixed "backplane" board mounted inside the machine that your removable MPU board plugs into. The motherboard typically wouldn't be removed from the machine, but it can be to repair or replace it.
I found a couple of old posts which had your exact issue:
http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=16963.msg146359#msg146359 (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=16963.msg146359#msg146359)
In that post, replacing the EEPROM on the motherboard resolved the EEPROM DATA issue.
Here's another post where the author stated that the motherboard was bad, and replacing the motherboard (which would also result in a new EEPROM being put in the machine) fixed his issue:

For the record, you have an IGT Player's Edge Plus (PE+) which is newer and slightly different from the Player's Edge (PE). Also, you have a standard MPU board (a "non-superboard"), at least the board you pictured in Reply #5 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=4469.msg23544#msg23544) is a standard board. The board that rapidroy pictured in Reply #6 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=4469.msg23561#msg23561) is a superboard (the main difference being the addition of a "DATA" EPROM socket and the ability to run some more complex games).

After looking at that forum post, it's exactly the same problem I'm having... so I guess I'm after that tiny EEPROM chip on the far back board of the machine... where do I get one of those? and it's one I'd have to solder onto that board?
-

Yes, you likely need to replace the very small square EEPROM that is soldered to the motherboard. You will need to obtain a replacement (look at the chip number on the the actual chip -- you should be able to find a replacement from an online circuit board component website), de-solder the existing EEPROM chip, and solder a replacement EEPROM to the board. You could also choose to solder a socket for the EEPROM to the board instead, making future replacements as easy as removing the socketed chip and replacing it with another. That said, the EEPROM does not go bad very often at all.
You could also just buy a replacement motherboard and install that, which should resolve the issue as well. This would be the simpler, although more expensive way to do it. Make sure you buy a motherboard designed for a PE+ slant top machine, as the motherboard is a different design from the upright machines.

Great Thanks I'll Be Pulling The Motherboard Out Here Shortly And Yea Finding A Socket Wouldn't Be A Bad Idea... Thanks... I'll Update Once I Get It All Worked Out...
-
*Update* I pulled the backplane from my machine, went onto ebay and bought the eprom data chip that matched the numbers to the chip, de-soldered the old (I'm a computer guy and wasn't afraid to solder on the board lol) replaced it with the new eprom chip, put everything back together, inserted the CLR CHIP, self test button, cleared the memory, and installed the game chip, powered on and Viola! works like a charm...!!! went thru the hopper test till it ran out of the handful of quarters I had on hand and everything works great! not bad for an 80's machine. THANKS to everyone that helped! Much appreciated!
So my next question...
should I oil the hopper and it sounds kinda dry when It spins. how and where should I if it needs it. and directions or video perhaps on the best way?
Thanks Again.
