Title: Bally 5500/6000 Monte Carlo power issue- may need some parts
Post by: Hamburger4378 on May 26, 2019, 11:33:24 AM

Replace module in power supply and fixed other loose connections.

Just took this in to work on. Everything seems to have power except  the reels, digital meters, and coin mech. Not seeing voltage from the top left connector of the power supply (looks like I need one). Only other thing I notice is the topper case is busted at the mount, Ican glue it or something unless someone has a spare case lying around for cheap. Thanks for any help in advance.

There is a sticky somewhere in the S5500 section on how to repair your own power supply for under $20.00.

I have a few Monte Carlo toppers here for parts. All you need is? Just the outer shell?

Picks would help.

I ordered one of those power supply units Badbaud wrote about in the 'sticky' from Jameco via eBay and it worked great and was easy...

Yep...

All I replaced was the board, or module. Un-plug and plug/play the new one. I never had to touch any of the other parts...

That large capacitor and full wave bridge never goes bad, at least I have never seen one go bad in over 15 years.

Ok guys it's got me puzzled. I swapped out the module in the power supply and show power when I checked with meter now.when I put it back in , nothing.  So by messing with the power cable that goes to the mpu board I was able  to get the 88ff error code by verly plugging the cable to the mpu board. When I plug all the way nothing. I checked all pins and looks good. Now all I can get is the red reset light blink and the bonus ball up top will keep spinning. When I push plug all the way in nothing.  Other question  is when I replace the topper case and got it all plugged back in all the leds blink and I can control the speed with a little knob on the side, Problem is when I power down the machine the leds keep blinking. Any help is appreciated.

The only way to turn off the LED is to unplug the game.

Ok thanks, any idea with whats going on with the plug? Almost  like it shorts when the plug is secured all the way on, but if I pull it almost off verily touching and wiggle I get power.

You say it shorts, does it pop a fuse or circuit breaker?
If not it could be dirty pins or a bad wire crimp.

Most likely one of the pins on the board has a bad solder joint.  You will have to remove it and reflow all those pins. Not  difficult just a little time consuming.

I took the back board out and checked everything and looked good. Pics attached.  I was able to get the plug plugged fully in with power now, however the the digital display screen (win paid/credit/credit in)on the front  nothing and the nonus wheel on top continuously spins in reverse.

You need to do a RAM clear on your main board.

Tried  to do a clear,  still nothing showing on display.  Red lite by reset button just flashes fast unless I push reset and it will go solid until I let go.

Did you use the Easy Clear chips or standard RAM clear chips?

Then they may be defective or you have a defective power supply or it is time to send your board to my shop.
