I know it’s possible to make them light up, but to function no. I’ve never heard of that being done.

User NeonKiss was working with somebody that would install player tracking systems in casinos.  It was expensive, but if you are willing to pay for it, you can do it for home.  There's certainly no low cost option that I know of.  Like the previous poster said, I have mine where if you insert the card it displays a message, but not anything like tracking your play to accumulate points, etc like a full fledged Casino Player tracking system.

A few people on the forum have hacked the chips and can get them to say "Joes Casino" or whatever phrase they want. Other than that they don't function.

A player tracking system (PTS) is usually tied into a central computer and rewards database. Since players are also tracked on every dollar they spend there is usually feeds into the reservations systems.
A group like Caesars or MGM transcend many cities and even countries.  The manufacturers of the PTS subsequently license their software based on the number of clients they support, interfaces into other modules and such. A privately owned place like Elcortez pays one price, while Station pays another, and MGM coughs up a lot... all based on scale. Subsequently when casinos liquidate, you never see any of the PTS systems in the wild... the data collected by the systems are even more valuable. I wouldn't be surprised if the vendor didn't sell the hardware/software as a turn key system and then took it back when the software license expires.

I am not saying that you couldn't home build a platform but the module in the slot itself is likely very proprietary in what they read / send back to the master computer.

I know this post is a little old now but i took a chance and bought the boards and software from agaslots.  They are overseas and dont take paypal so i was sceptical at first but i recieved the boards and software from alex at agaslots no problem.  The boards have playertracking, tito, aft  as well as progressive jackpot capibilities..  you do need a pc to run the server software.  Also these boards eliminate needing to run serial cables to the pc.  They communicate over ethernet.
