Title: [SOLVED] My Last Fix and I'm STUMPED!
Post by: peasoup49 on December 14, 2020, 06:27:41 PM
I thought I would come here before I clip off the pins on my RS232-TTL adapter for Pins 0 & 1 (Serial0) and connect leads to Pins 18 & 19 (Serial1) and assemble this as one unit.  I'm having one hell of a time getting SoftSerial to work and I could really use some pointers.  Logically, I would say it sounds like it should be possible.  How, I don't know.  I've tried different examples and applied them, I've tried writing some code that by the documents is SUPPOSED to work, but I'm unsuccessful.

Like I mentioned, I'd really like to get this into one assembly and get rid of the blue and white leads.  Thanks.

I had same problem - same serial shield - except for my design I had to clip pins 2 and 3 on shield to get it to work on my prototype; for the final version I just used a MAX3232 serial port; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083L99CGZ (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083L99CGZ)
I liked the idea of stacking everything but it didn't work reliably.

Font after "...serial port;" was changed to 1pt!

I'm thinking that's going to be the route, clip pins 2 & 3.  I've read that I can change the pin assignment in the "pins_arduino.h" file, but I'm not sure if I want to attempt that since I haven't dealt with .h and .cpp files in quite some time.  Probably would help having a little extra testicle fortitude to do it. HAHAHAHA

I also stumbled on a board someone designed with a 328 on it that had pins 2 & 3 as another UART port as well as pins 0 & 1.  But it seems that company is out of business now.  It would've been perfect for this project.  This also tells me that one is able to modify the pin layout.  Everywhere I've read, pins 2 & 3 were PWM only on the 2560.  The 'tinker-er' in me is calling BS.  If I get the gumption to modify the pins file and it works without turning my Mega into a brick, I'll let you know.

p.s. @sayoutdabunker, I've noticed that the fonts get changed between preview and posting occasionally.  I've seen it change when using the '[ code ]' tags as well, just as a note.

Shortstack, Stayouttadabunker.  Same, same. LOL  My apologies, I must've just been reading a post you made and the name stuck.

So this just came in the mail from Santa @ Amazon.  It's a 328, Wi-Fi (w/optional external antenna), and claims to have 32Mb on board.  I wish it had an SD card for 'just in case' situations, but obviously not a deal breaker.  And I thought I'd try out a different style RS232 Shield.

It's complete.  Ugh.  Been a long couple of months.  Below is a video I did of some of the features it does on the bigger of the two programs.  Some of the stuff you see here I programmed into the smaller card. I've got a little more room that I'm going to try and squeeze the hopper status on the smaller card.  No audio, sorry.  Forgot to enable, plus the mic was across the room anyhow.  Hum your favorite tune and pretend there's background music of your choice. LOL  I did a screen capture of the PC clicking thru some buttons.  Waiting for a friend that's proficient in Photoshop to make my logo for the top of the screen.

Thanks!  Hell, I hate doing my own. LOL  Had H&R Block do mine for 2018 and found a mistake by the Title company when I sold my house.  Got a letter from the IRS saying I owed $131,000 for 2018 last weekend.  Thank gawd that's cleared up.  :duh:

Awesome job on the no wires look!  Could you post the links to which shields you used?  Any other info on your design or program would be awesome too!

Thanks!

Boards I used:
Sunfounder atMega2560 and also the Sunfounder mega328 (Uno copy)
Sunfounder Ethernet Shield
TinySine RS232-TTL Shield
Acrylic case for the 2560 and 328 were just for looks.

I'm sure any replacement can be used.

I found it easier to program on the 2560 because it has extra Serial ports to utilize.  That way I wouldn't have to flip the switch on the RS232 Shield every time I uploaded to the card and just connected through jumper wires from Pins 19 & 18 on the 2560 to Pins 0 & 1 on the shield that sat off to the side.  Going to the final setup (as in the picture) just need to remember to change everything in the code associated with Serial1 (Pins 19 & 18) to Serial (Pins 0 & 1).  When it came time to program the Uno, I just removed some features (code) to fit in the 32kb space.  If you're stuck at a point, I'm willing to assist to get you past your roadblock.  It was a difficult relearning process since I hadn't written any code in about 20 years.  I spent tons of hours Googlin' to find what needs to be done to make a certain part work the way I wanted.  Normally, I would share my code, but I haven't decided if I want to make these for others since I've been unemployed since March (tired of eating raman noodles, LOL).  A lot of work was put into the 251kb of typing and it compiles down to 114kb to fit on the 2560.

:thank_you: For sharing!  Awesome job!  Times are tough for a lot of people right now.  If you decide to start making these I am sure you will find some buyers on this forum!
