Title: Cloning HDD question
Post by: MazzMayhem on June 20, 2022, 11:33:42 PM
Hello, picked up my first G23 and I would like to swap out my HDD for a SSD . I have a docking station clone devise but I’m not sure of the best way of going about it. Should I clear the cabinet memory and the safe storage first while the HDD is in the machine? Can I clear it while it’s on the docking station? Do I even have to clear the memory and storage at all? Thanks for your time.
After searching the archives further I found the answer to my question

Don't clear anything.  Just clone and install the drive.

Turn off slot machine.
Remove HDD.
Clone the drive.
Install SSD.
Turn on machine.
Done.

I'm glad this thread just surfaced.  I just cloned an old SSD to a new SSD and didn't clear anything.  It is working perfectly.  One thing that I have been thinking about is the extra space on the clone drive that doesn't get written on with files.  I have read where many people who are cloning HDD's and SSD's (for PC or MAC use) say that their computer doesn't recognize the extra space on the new cloned drive.  For example lets say you have an 80gb SSD and you clone it to a 120gb SSD.  Apparently even though the new drive is 120gb it will appear as 80gb to a computer and in order for a computer to recognize the additional 40gb you have to run some sort of partitioning procedure.  Has anyone had an issue with this, and has anyone actually partitioned the extra storage space and made it available for a slot machine to utilize?
