PE+ Issues
« on: June 16, 2021, 05:36:46 AM »
Howdy. So I got a PE+ running joker poker with a non super board. It plays just fine. But it has a few graphic glitches. So whats happening is a few things. One every time I power up the machine I have a weird thing just above the first card. Once the first hand is played it goes away and does not come back. That issue is minor. The second issue I have is if the machine is at idle and no one is playing it I get these windows that show up over the cards with scrambled graphics. This only happens with the "Play 5 Coins" Message is not flashing on the top. When it says "Play 5 Coins" everything looks fine, the play 5 coins flashes on/off and everything is good. Then the play 5 coins goes away for a bit and these windows pop back up. the windows are random locations. Sometimes one window most times two windows over two cards. The final issue is if I have double up on and you win a hand double up pops up and the "yes" and "no" windows that pop up are all scrambled too. Here are a few pics. I did not up load the double up window as I currently don't have it set on. Any ideas whats causing this and how to correct it?

Sounds like graphics problems. I would think a problem with the programmed capx or color eproms. Try removing the capx 1st and reseating it. Think it has the card picture data, maybe oxidation on the pins and bad connections. Try reseating the color eproms next, then maybe the game chips. Maybe just do them all and see if the problem changes. In idle the display can be setup to do animation on the face cards,  that may explain the 5 coin flash part. If the chips are corrupt I'm sure we could get you some replacements.

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Hi Tony! So I forgot to mention that I did reseat chips. But the animation you mentioned lead me to a temporary fix. Turning off animation stopped the idle graphic issue. I assume I'll still have double up problem.  For now this is good. I'll revisit this as I get time. Thanks

It sounds to me like you might have the wrong Cap chip for your game.
Can you post the chip numbers......

One of our members BrianT has built and extensive "kit guide" that lists all the matching chips for each game.

Just a few tid bits of other random thoughts....
Non superboards use CAP chips, and superboards use CAPX chips. Same physical chip, just programmed differently. Not interchangeable.
It could be that the game was previously used in a superboard and you have a CAPX chip in play.

On the superboard - You should also be aware that there are two different sizes of chips 256 and 512. There is a small jumper just above the Program Chip socket (game chip). If this is in the wrong position for the rom set sometimes the game will still start up but the colors don't work (ie all white cards). I don't know if this exists on the non superboards as I never looked.

If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

The CAP/CAPX chip determines the color palette available to the game. If the colors on the screen were wrong that would be a good suspect, but having wrong chunks of graphics displayed on the screen is not a symptom of the wrong CAP(X) chip.

The chunks of graphics are read from the EPROMS and passed onto the serial graphics RAM's below them.
The RAMs are clocked and send out the pixels it got from the EPROMS line by line to write the video onto the screen.
A weak or defective RAM can send out the wrong pixels and cause the clusters of off color or wrong position pixels to be displayed.
The wrong cap chip would display the wrong color across the entire screen, not just at one spot on the video display.
For example anything that should be red will be green.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

For now I have the animation turned off and that fixed the graphic issues at idle. Well it hid to problem from view is more like it. I assume the double up windows will still be garbled but I think for now I'll leave double up off and call it good. When I get caught up with everything else I'll revisit this. I'm thinking switching to a super board would be the way to go anyways and I assume the problem would be gone as a extra bonus. For now this is good. Game plays fine and when I walk past it at idle it no longer bothers me lol.

If you were to take a picture of the PCB (main board) and focus on the ROM chips I can tell which graphics chip (or program chip) would resolve the issue.
