Title: Broken Spiral Cam
Post by: Bally Bill on July 25, 2022, 11:01:58 AM
Hello All, I did not think it would happen that soon, but these machines are 40 years old and things do get brittle over time. I will use some JB weld and hope it holds but this might be a replacement job if not. Lucky to have only one other machine with the plastic cam and the older EMs are metal.

Bill,
Maybe some crazy type glue to hold all the parts together.
Then some type of reinforcement on the flat side. Aluminum or CD disc / JB weld.
Might take some modifying on the CD disc.

Hi David, thankfully it was just one big piece that broke off the cam, I had to remove the zero switch to get the cam back to the correct location before I started then I lightly abraded both sides of the bonding surfaces then cleaned with alcohol and applied Loctite All Plastics Super Glue and let dry for 6 hours. I lightly applied J-B Weld 8237 and will let it dry for about 3 days and then sand down area to match the contour of cam and that should do the trick.

Sounds good, these new modern adherents are great.
Let us know how it turns out.
Maybe include a few photos.

K LAR has replacement units if you want to go that route.

Hi David and KJ, Looks like it's going to hold up but time and usage will tell, here is few pictures of the repair and some testers red paint just to seal the adhesive. Thanks KJ for the lead on the new cam this repair fails
