Title: Bally 891-20 Super Continental - reels stop abruptly
Post by: essmeier on August 12, 2022, 08:45:10 AM
EDIT: Loose screw holding the clock fan to the shaft.  Tightening the screw fixed the problem.

It's been about a week since my always-troublesome 891-20 Super Continental has acted up, so it's time for a new problem.

Ordinarily, one pulls the handle and the reels spin for a few seconds before stopping, one at at time.

No longer.  You pull and they all immediately stop at once.

Probably an issue on the reel mechanism, but...what, exactly?  Video attached.

looks like the reels are spinning and stopping in sequence, but they are doing it very fast.

the clock and fan are responsible for slowing down the reel latching, so you have something wrong with either the clock gears or the roll/tension pin that ties the clock to the reel trip lever shaft broke.

https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/videos/pushing_timer_link.mp4 shows how the clock is supposed to slow the movement of everything.   https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/videos/Latch_Link.m4v shows the shaft that is driving the mechanism to latch the reels.  The shaft should turn slowly as the clock spins.

I'll take a look over the weekend and see what's up.  After all the electrical problems I've had (and fixed!) with this slot, a mechanical problem would be a welcome change of pace.

looked again and slowed the video way down ... could also be one of:

1] reel shaft is not pinned into the frame notches correctly

2] the L-shaped stop bracket on the bottom/back of the right side of the reel mech is out of position and the reels are kicking before the index arm latch back and allow the reels to spin.

This one turned out to be simple - the two setscrews holding the clock fan on the shaft were loose and the fan had jammed up against something inside the cabinet.

I pushed the fan back into place, tightened the two screws, and the machine is working correctly again.  That was a 30 second fix.

It's nice to have a simple problem for once.
