new member and s2000 Question re buzz/hum , I read the faq
« on: October 10, 2021, 03:15:41 AM »
I had been wanting a  4th of July Machine for years and while I did not get one I found the closest to it.  an S2000 setup for  RWB Deluxe.  has everything but the spin to win.
what it also has is the buzz hum that goes with an 502 board and the MM lite addon. I read the faq on the question but the faq seems to be lacking in details
there are 3 pics but I do not know how the 10K 1/2W pot is used.,  I found a pot as described with the 3 legs. but no idea where to go from there.
I am very comfortable doing any soldering down to SMT level if needed but slots are new to me.  just want a buzz kill if possible.

and if anyone comes across a complete 4th of july glass/chip setup I will pay  happily for it.

cheers all  nate .

and a pic

I have not performed this modification. Proceed if you like.

I read the FAQ. It is telling you to install a 1/2 watt 10 k potentiometer on one of the wires going to the speaker(s), depending on whether you have stereo or mono wiring harness. If stereo, you would want to put 1 pot in line with each speaker.  If mono, then 1 pot in line before the speakers are "y'd", hope that makes sense.

I drew a diagram showing the potentiometer installed in line with one of the wires to a speaker.

I must admit it looks to me the FAQ was written for someone with some prior experience with mono and stereo (Amp board) experience with the slot machine.  Not so much for a new member with little to no slot machine experience.  Hope this helps clarify some of the FAQ for you.

PM me if you have questions.
Tony

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

I did this mod for the 502 buzz. It works well, better than the resistor mod in my opinion.

I agree with Robert. Much better way to correct the hum with those boards.

Not all 50x boards have that capacitor. I have been fixing a lot of these boards lately and i do this mod to everyone one i touch have never had any issues. This mod replicates the fatter traces as you would find ona 504 board.

Not all 50x boards have that capacitor.

Thanks for letting us know. I’ve seen it on a lot so I assumed it was on all.

Here is a little explanation of a Potentiometer I found helpful as well.

Identify the 3 main terminals sticking out of the middle of the pot. Place your pot on a flat surface with the 3 prongs that stick out facing you. These are your terminals. The first terminal, or terminal 1, is your ground. The middle terminal, or terminal 2, is the input signal for the pot. The third terminal, or terminal 3, is your output signal. The shaft on top controls a small ring attached to the second terminal. Turning it controls how low or high the input is.[1]

If it helps, think of a potentiometer as a dimmer switch. The ground is all the way off, terminal 2 is the switch itself, and terminal 3 is the switch turned all the way up.
A potentiometer is almost always used to throttle an input signal so that it can be adjusted. Sometimes, you can use a pot to overclock a device with a stronger signal.

Do not do this mod. All it does is lower the valume and create a heat source in the top box. The proper way to get rid of the hum is to upgrade the faulty traces on the mpu.
