IGT Quarter Hopper Knife issues
« on: August 23, 2022, 07:32:17 AM »
Has anyone dealt with the new quarters seem to be thin enough to cause a jam or mostly force the knife forward so they can slip behind it after about the 3rd quarter?

I wondered what things might correct this issue. I have replaced the plate and shelf both with new ones. Tried multiple new knifes.

I wondered if a metal knife would work better or ???

I don't think the jams have anything to do with the quarters you're using. I run quarters (some of them new) on 8 of my machines and seldom ever get a jam. I have had a couple of problem hoppers that needed some attention and fine tuning. The problem was usually with the knife adjustment.

Whenever I have problems with hopper jams, I pull out the hopper and bench test it so I can see what's going on. You can turn the motor shaft by hand and watch the coins in slow motion or connect a power supply directly to the motor terminals and observe it run at normal speed.

I have bench tested it and the quarters want to hit every knife in the hopper just right to make it pop forward then allowing all the quarters to flow behind it. I have the metal shoot plate even bent a little to try and apply pressure to keep the knife down.

Usually a new knife will do the trick. When they get old they become more flexible and allow the quarter to sneak behind it.

Check behind the wheel shelf plate...make sure it is completely free of ANY debris or build-up.
Service it completely - like the '57 Chevy in your garage.
It sounds like your wheel isn't running flat, causing the knife to come up off of the plate, creating a gap and allowing coins to get under the edge of the knife.

The tip of the knife should be sharp. Often times older knives get the tip broken off which leads to coins sneaking in behind the knife. As slots4home said, a new knife will likely resolve your issues.

I have had some luck in reconstituting knives by using a heat gun to make them all soft and then clamping them between two scrap pieces of 2x4.
With that said, knives are cheap and are considered a consumable. I don't recommend bending anything on the hopper.
