bally s9000 black screen
« on: September 30, 2022, 07:44:48 PM »
On boot up black screen states vga input then comes up a no signal and goes no futher.  Just brought back from dealer service where they put in new batteries and did a ram clear and reset the stars and bars game.  Worked find there but in transportation something went wrong.  Could the 24v power supply cause this?  Have resetted all boards and cables.  Would welcome any ideas.  Machine Bally S9000 circa 2006 Stars and Bars.
Thanks

I would check the video cables, maybe they got loose during transport.  Does the mpu beep after power up?

No beep, reel lights flash on then go off. "no signal" flashs on screen.  Does the 24v power supply power the mpu board?

I have this problem right now with an S9E. I suspect its a video card on its way out. Does your MPU have a video card installed by any chance? If it does, remove it and plug the video cable directly into the MPU to see if it beeps and displays an image.

The mpu has it's own mini-itx type power supply.  If you are not electronics adverse, you may want to remove it and open it up to look for bulging caps to replace.  The 24v power supply powers peripherals like the printer and the reels.

Sometime we overlook the obvious, but you did power on the mpu with the little white switch on the mpu?

there are 3 test points near the cabinet power switch, next to the power leds. You can check for the 5, 12 and 24 voltages there.  This is only for the two power supplies on the left wall. As stated already, the mpu has it's own.

When you boot up, power on from left to right, main power, cabinet power, then mpu power(small switch on the mpu. you should see the red light and hear a short beep {as mentioned in previous post). without the beep, Rick is on the right track of course.

Always check the simple things first of course, e.g. power plug into mpu pushed in completely, cf cards inserted fully, and mpu pushed in completely. be sure to have main power off before inserting or removing any boards or cards. I know this is obvious, but I've seen it happen before.

it's cold here, in Canada, so when machines are moved in pickup trucks etc, they get cold. bringing them into a warm house, and turning them on before they warm up and dry out any condensation ruins many components. I always tell people to wait a day, but anxiety gets the better of some poeple.

Thanks,
Wayne
