Hello, help in identifying this machine.
« on: October 04, 2022, 08:36:57 PM »
Hello All,

Just go this machine today, first machine ive owned. Wondering if someone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction here. Im trying to find out what specific machine this is, so i can get a user manual of some sort. Want to look into troubleshooting and see if i can actually get it working.

When i first plugged it in, nothing happened. Then i fiddled with stuff, plugged and unplugged connectors, wires, etc.. and plugged it back in and got lights. Eventually i got to a screen that said "ram error" i think, then it went to the error message in the picture, and now it goes to a message saying "call attendant". It seems as if its making progress on its own!  LOL   Anyways, id really appreciate some direction here. Also i have no keys for the machine. Looks like it takes one on the outside cabinet (it has 2 wires attached to it on the inside, wondering if i can hotwire this or put a toggle switch?) and a key inside the machine (appears to be protecting a computer board of some sort). The key slot for locking and unlocking the door has been removed, so it just opens without a key. Anywho, ive rambled on enough.

If you need any info, please ask. thanks again, in advance! (sorry for the night pic... need to get better ones in the day)

found this... i dont think its particular to my machine, but will this work on mine?

What he can do if he doesn't have a key available is with the machine off remove the 2 wires from switch and remove the switch then bring the 2 wires thru the hole to the out side of the cabinet. Keep the wires from touching until its time to make contact. Touching the 2 wires together does the same as turning the key.

It's a 13" Game King.  Original ones had a 3802 MPU board installed, but it may have been upgraded to a 3902 MPU as some point.  Post a picture of the MPU board and we can tell you what it is.

The keyswitch uses a standard 2341 jackpot reset key.  You can get one from any of the vendors here.  If you want to do more troubleshooting while waiting for one you can touch the switch wires together to advance to the next message.  When the door is closed and the machine encounters an error condition it will say Call Attendant.  When the door is opened it will tell you what the error is through a few turns of the keyswitch.  System error is usually a software related error.  Touch the wires together and take pictures of the next screens and we may be able to help you narrow it down to a specific component.

You guys are great! So, i made a jumper and touched the wires, popped open the door and got the "Ivalid config index" message (first picture attached), i touched the wires again and got the second picture with "main battery low and options verification required" message (second picture) I have seen several posts about batteries, so i will continue to rummage through those posts. Im super excited the screen came up, i can see the games in the back!  LOL   The part of the machine that takes money, bill receiver? Sounded a bit off, not like the ones in the casino. I am going to see if i can remove it and clean it somehow? Maybe it needs some sort of lubricant? Oh, i forgot, i had to hold a reset button down for a couple seconds.. there was only one little white button, staring me in the face, so thats the one i pushed in. That was between the first and second images. thanks again guys. Ill clean this baby up and show her a little love, shes been neglected for a long time!

so this is what i found...

Options Verification Required is an informational message that appears after an initial setup has occurred.  It will clear after you replace the battery and close the machine door.

looks like i need to replace the battery!  Ill also grab some pictures of the MPU board when i get a chance. Going to order a key as well!

Great explored the menu, calibrated the touch screen, was not able to find any way to bypass the batter message. I believe i need to replace the battery first. I will get a key and a battery. Thank you for all the information. Wondering if its ok, to put it "out of service" and then shut off the main power?

Yes, you need a new battery before going any further.  Get a battery holder and solder it on, then next time you won't have to do any soldering to replace the battery.  Personally I use CR2354 batteries on my 3902 boards because it's the same as what is used on 044 MPUs and they last longer than 2032 batteries.

The sound you heard was the bill validator cycling, that's normal and a good thing.

Putting the machine "out of service" just displays "out of service" on the monitor and prevents the machine from accepting any money.  There's really no reason to put it out of service for home use machines.

That's a 3902MPU board.  It's the latest one you'll be able to install in the 13" cabinet.  IGT did not make a 044 motherboard for the older game kings (early 13" and 19" cabinets).

The keyswitch on the front of it was used for some old game king software.  It allowed you to access a privileged options menu to change certain settings like payback percentage etc.  You have Game King 4.0 software installed and it uses a keychip (Key 17) to change those settings.  Contact member RB and he can set you up with one.  You can remove that keyswitch if you want, it doesn't do anything with that software and you probably don't have a key for it anyhow.

It looks like someone already did a "the bigger the blob the better the job" soldering job on the battery at one point.  To do it correctly you need to remove the board from the tray and desolder the battery from the bottom side.

After you get the battery replaced it will probably work.

Update, took a stab at soldering a new batter, and burnt the battery. So I just sort of wedged another new battery between the contacts, and viola! Waiting on a battery and battery holder, that should to the trick. Machine seems to be functioning fine. Need a coin hopper, but was thinking maybe ill go cashless. The bill verifier takes the bills and credits proper amounts. Im digging through options and settings. Thank you for all the information and help! You all rock!

Just an update to the thread for anyone who stumbles across this. I got a slot tech key, and 2 key chips. Huge shoutout and thanks to Tilt and RB! Also got a battery holder and battery. Still need to solder the battery holder into place. Had to hunt down a few errors with Door Open/Close sensors being a little out of alignment as far as it goes for the door to the bill holder being sensed as completely closed, which caused the error of unable to put in cash and touch screen not working on game screen. I had removed some of the inner parts to do a deep cleaning and when i went to put it all back together, a few of the pieces were just a little out of alignment. Going to experiment with keychips now (key 17 and key 22), will report back! Thank you all!

Just an update for anyone having the same issue. Special thanks to Tilt and RB for all the guidance and assistance.

-Tilt has a great write up on using keychip 22 on the forum. Read and follow those instructions here.
IGT I Game Plus Key 22 Chip Installation Instructions” https://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=883.0

I may have used the keychips in the wrong order, and i believe i got lucky with keychip 17. I will explain my process, following Tilts write up above I did the following.

1. power down machine
2. removed base keychip from main computer board. I did not have a "chip puller" so i broke down two plastic forks, using 1 tine on each and carefully wedged them, from each end, under the keychip. I would be very careful at this if i were you, i lacked the patience and actually ended up bending a couple of the metal prongs on the base keychip. fortunately i was able to bend them back into formation without breaking them when i went to reinstall this chip at the end of the process.
3. I then used keychip 17, and without knowing got lucky with using this. Ill elaborate. I put keychip 17 in and then powered up the machine. The machine went to a blank (blackish) screen, and nothing happened? During this process, i noticed that the amber lights on the front of the mother board had seemed to be light up in a different pattern than usual. I actually held the reset button in for a couple of seconds, and seemed nothing happened. What i realized later is that the keychip 17 actually loads to a blank screen, then you remove it and put the base keychip back in to get to the specialized menu at following bootup.
4. Having not understood the workings of keychip 17, i powered off the machine, and swapped keychip 17 for keychip 22 (stopped bending chip prongs by this point LOL). After booting with keychip 22 i was presented with what i refer to as a "reset boot screen". There were 3 options for resets, and then a final option to reboot. I changed all options to "yes" and reboot the machine. The last option mentioned something about "reboot keychip", i wasnt sure what this would do, but i just changed it to yes and went ahead with the reboot.
4.5'ish?? This recollection is vague.. but at some point i was prompted to select a payout option. I disabled thermal printer and also disabled hopper.
5. After above reboot, i powered down the machine once more. Swapped keychip 22 for the original base chip, and put it all back together and powered up the machine.
6. I was now able to change games that were displayed and all the accounting info, ie. payouts etc. bills received, etc.. had all been reset to Zero values. I am unfamiliar with menu layouts, but by browsing through them, i was able to find the games and choose which ones displayed and which ones didnt. In the individual games there were several options "game 1", "game 2", etc... i have no idea what they are for, but i just activated (changed red to yellow) the first listing of each game i wanted to be able to play. I also just selected the denomination of .25 cents for them.
7. After saving all new game options, when i went to try and play games, i had an error "operator must set denomination to non blank value"... one of the verify options errors. After hunting around a bit, i found "setup", "machine options", and i believe something referencing "denomination". (i apologize i am writing this hours after i did it and dont recall). I then set hopper to 0.01 and on the next screen selected .05, .10, .25, and 1.00 betting amounts.
8. I believe the machine rebooted at this point. I got a couple more of the ram error memory non recoverable errors (as previously seen), and just kept resetting/clearing using the slot tech key on the upper right hand side of my cabinet. Twist, twist, twist. I now remember getting that concerning blue error screen with the ram error or unrecoverable type message earlier on in this process as well. I just twist the key when this happens and hold in the reset button for 2-3 seconds as prompted to.

Keep in mind, all of the above was performed with the main door open. The menu with the advanced options seems to only be available with door open and after briefly pressing the little "white" reset button next to the amber lights. Took me a while to realize that there are several different menus. So pressing the reset button with the front door open gets you the menu I was using for all the above actions.

Apologies for the confusing write up, I am not much of a writer, my brain is rather discombobulated, and its the best i can recollect after waiting to write this post. Anyways hope this helps! I will try and clarify any details if possible. Hope this helps.

Thanks again to Tilt and RB, and everyone else who has contributed. Great forum, fantastic people here! You are appreciated!

I can't take credit for the keychip instructions.  Bettorslots wrote the guide and I reposted it here from the old board.  That's why it says courtesy of Bettor slots at the bottom of the post

Key 17 isn't menu driven like Key 22 is and it can only key the machine.  It doesn't have any RAM or EEPROM Clear options.  If it keyed successfully the two end amber LEDs on the MPU board will illumnate and then you can power down and replace the base chip.  When it boots it should boot to the keychip menu.  You can't have any credits on the machine when you key it.

Key 22 can key and clear the machines RAM and EEPROM.  That's not something you normally need to do and can create a lot of extra work for you if you just wanted to change one setting.

When you select the games you can have 12 different ones per denomination.  Game 1 Game 2 etc determines the pay table for the game and hence the payback percentage.  It will have the payback percentage on the game selection.  Game 1 is usually the highest.

There isn't really a step by step guide for setting the game up because the menus are often different depending on the game software.  The steps you need to do are the same (select machine and player denominations, select the games and paybacks, payout devices, credit limits, etc) but the menu buttons you have to push to get to those settings may be different.

You'll get it figured out, but it may take a few times.  Just be careful about bending those pins.  You usually only get to bend them back once, the next time it gets bent and straightened out it breaks off :duh:
