Title: BB1 converted to BB2...why buy a BB2?
Post by: Yoeddy1 on March 24, 2016, 11:17:39 PM
Hey guys,

I've seen a few out here that converted BB1s to BB2s...MPU, monitors, OLED panel, etc.  Then I see them turn around and sell their creation just to buy a dedicated BB2.

What's the reason for this?  Are there performance gains?  I think the BB1 Bose speaker even sounds better than the BB2 Bose speaker.

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are.

Thanks,
Jason

There are a few reasons

#1 Thinner form factor
#2 No home made / modified bezel for 22" monitor
#3 Plug and play for BB3 MPU - just drop it in and play the games. No need to make another harness and modify a bb2 power supply

but my thoughts are this:

The BB1 power supply was not designed to run a BB2 mpu or larger monitors -  it is drawing more than the 300W it was designed for.
I've had to replace several power supplies especially on my transmissive machines.    I no longer power the monitors through the back plane.

Cost.. I spent more converting my BB1 to a BB2 vs just buying a BB2. Plus, turning a BB1 into a transmissive is a chore, while a BB2 takes about 3.459 minutes. And as JDK mentioned, the depth of the machine is much slimmer/modern.

Speaking of transmissive, look who's riding shotgun! May post a pic of this tranny once setup!  :cool_thumb_up:

LMAO At the Alice Topper.... hahahahaha love it!

The point the sound is better on a BB1 is false. I think it's WAY cleaner than the BB1.

How would you know that unless you are playing the exact same games in machines set up exactly the same with them side by side?

How are the strips? Most of tranny strips are in really bad shape. Unless you find a new pair... I mean set.

Never thought I'd see anything close to decent Alice strips!  All the ones I see in the casinos are so faded that some symbols are barely there.

I forgot heat distribution.

BB1.5 runs way too hot IMO.

I had to modify the cabinet to get better air flow.

The metal vents severely reduce the air flow.  I cut the metal
Vents off and replaced it with a screen.

Also the bottom fan should blow in and the top fan on the other side should
Blow out creating a current over the mpu.

By experimenting I have found this to be the
Best setup.

Do not remove the coin tray.  That messes up the
Air flow

And here's her goods. A bit abused, but doable.. - I look forward to putting some miles on this tranny! When I'm done, I will list her here for someone else to enjoy.

At least there some color to the burnt side. I've seen worse.
