Com Link Failure

Post by: qbert on June 23, 2020, 05:29:28 PM
When you first turn it on what does the top box show?
What does the VFD say? Does it say waiting for video display?
Com link failure probably comes on 7 or eight minutes into the boot cycle.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: jake511511 on June 23, 2020, 05:38:21 PM
It shows it booting up...and waiting for the video display
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 23, 2020, 05:41:54 PM
OK great that means the lower unit and MPU is good.
Does the top box ever show anything?
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: jake511511 on June 23, 2020, 05:43:22 PM
The wheels are spinning and it says on top box COM Link Failure.....and on the bottom video display com failure
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 23, 2020, 05:45:54 PM
Way before the wheels spin what does the top box show? A red white and blue finger or a green and yellow energy star symbol? Or is it completely dead?
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure

this is what its showing
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 23, 2020, 07:00:05 PM
OK the top box and the hard drive appear to be in order.
So it is a com failure between the top and bottom box.
I have a few more questions.
After that screen says checking for valid crcs. It should say initializing please wait this is immediately followed by the VFD display saying MS verify app. Then followed by the top box saying starting ATA application software.
This is the handshake between the top and bottom box that must occur.
I need to know if any of this is happening?

Did this just happen one day when you turned it on?
Did you move the machine? Anything that you can tell me will help.

I was there when it happened also. The machine was up and running.I plugged another machine in the same power strip. When I did that both machines shut down.Denver Duck was working fine before that happened.
I know it got to the MS verify app point
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: jake511511 on June 23, 2020, 07:35:29 PM
Ms verify app was as far as it got
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 23, 2020, 09:48:16 PM
OK
1) Start by reseating the plug on the back of the top box with the 5 grey wires going to it.
2) In the lower cabinet, reseat the plug with the 5 gray wires going to the power distribution box (the box behind the coin hopper)
3) Reseat the ribbon cable going from the power distribution box to the backplane board on both ends.
The next three are a toss up on which to do first.
My suggestion as follows:
1)Replace the small board in the power distribution box where the ribbon cable plugs in.
2) Replace the backplane board.
3) Replace the MPU.

Let me know how it turns out.

Great suggestions.
He has a rwb 3 reel s2000.Could he swap the whole power distribution box and see if the problem moves?
Having the two s2000 machines he can swap parts till he can get the problem to move or it corrects his problem.
To Jake...If you swap them take a picture of the connections on both boxes to be sure you have all the connections hooked up.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 24, 2020, 04:58:21 AM
Yes and the rwb would even probably still work after the swap. Probably easier to just swap the small board.

Something is still bothering me because it does seem like top and bottom are talking.
Can you confirm if the top box says starting ATA software after VFD says ms verify.....
This would happen right before the wheels spin.
One more thing verify that nothing changes by lifting and lowering the door switch. If the above is all happening it will probably be the backplane or mpu

I tried everything .......Does anyone think its the backplane.......or the Mpu......thats gone out...thanks
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 24, 2020, 08:57:50 PM
Please list exactly what "everything" is that you tried.
If you have spare door I/O cards you can try them first since they are cheap and easy( also susceptible to power surge)
Or like I posted above backplane or MPU.
Does anything display on the panel leds after the reels spin?
We are getting into netplex devices now. Try unplugging printer and BV (only when power is off)

That's harddrive corruption failure.
Need to know if it is bios 1 or 2.
Initial splash screen a red white and blue finger or the green and yellow energy star?

The SB label has to be wrong. SB000523 is a Larry Lobster SB.
OK what is the max credits playable on your machine?
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: The laneman on June 28, 2020, 02:15:10 PM
It was playing as a Denver Duck.
It has the multi game hard drive in it if that matters
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 28, 2020, 02:44:40 PM
No HD doesn't matter the SB controls which game plays off the HD.
I can tell you what the chip is if I know the max credits playable.

Guys
I have a Denver Duck with SB000523, 75credit. Its playing with SG000290 game chips. Not a multi HD.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on June 28, 2020, 05:11:18 PM
My bad you are correct SB000523 is a 75 credit Duck.
The problem is the SG number
I believe that you have SG000536.
I have no PSR for SG000523.
Chances are if you were running a multi drive you were using SG000536.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure

It is 536

It was working before you plugged the other machine in. Take the cmos battery out of the topbox computer for a few minutes to reset the ram and put the battery back in, replace it if needed. Do standard topbox reset with a ps2 keyboard

Did you use a PS2 keyboard to enter current default usage? How was the battery?
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on July 01, 2020, 07:57:17 PM
Are you sure you plugged the hard drive in correctly?
It's not identified.
You must be really careful if you shift the plug incorrectly really bad things happen to the harness.
See attached from the left there should be 4 open pins(2 rows of 2) then starting from the left after the open pins the plug should have the red wire on the left top of drive.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on July 01, 2020, 08:01:01 PM
I can't stress enough be careful with this plug.
I usually plug the hard drive in then I mount it to the case so you can be sure it is plugged in correctly.
Also as cowboy said you must find an old computer keyboard with the small purple PS2 plug. Plug it into the top box and turn on the machine. Keep pressing the delete key until the bios screen appears find the " Load optimized defaults " and press that button then save and exit. Turn off the machine and unplug the keyboard. Restart and you should a least get back to where you were before harddrive went out

From the back of the top box unplug the plug that has the six grey colored wires, then boot the machine and see if the message changes.
Is the harddrive listed on the initial boot screen?
That one picture you posted showed it recognizes the cdrom drive but the first thing it should have recognized was the harddrive. Your picture showed no harddrive.

Jake,
You have got to give me some more help. You can't just tell me the end result. Please try to explain what you did and what happened. Did the top screen go back to fully booting? Did the reels spin? Did it recognize the harddrive on the boot sequence? Without the little details of what it does while it boots makes trouble shooting your machine near impossible. We need detailed information not just the end result!
I have been asking for details from your first posts.
Your answer I've done everything??.

Do you have any spare parts like door IO cards, displays or anything else?

Not trying to yell at you but trying to fix your machine.
Coin in jam is a netplex issue. Yes it's going to say com link failure the grey plug I had you discount is the com link!

Do a youtube video of the machine booting up and share the link on here.
That would really help Qbert out diagnosing the problem.

This is the sequence it boots up with the energy star on the monitor then it goes to blue screen reel touch....then to the gold touch finger testing executable images for valid CRC....then goes to initializing ....then wheels turn.....and coin-in jam on door display...com link failure on top screen
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on July 04, 2020, 01:22:37 PM
Ok good sequence of events.
Now what happens if you plug the top box grey plug back in?
Hard drive good. We can check your original again later.
Coin in jam could be anything on the netplex circuit.
These include both door I/O cards, printer, BV, VFD display and a few more.

Do any of the panel buttons light after it gets to coin in jam?

That machine dont have a coin mech and a hopper if Im not mistaken.
They are probably enabled in the setup.
I dont think the clear and key chips that you have for your rwb s2000 will work in the denver duck.I think you will need the newer clear 224 and key 45 for that machine.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure

Nothing should have changed you should not need a clear or key.
What does the VFD say coin in jam or coin out jam?
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: The laneman on July 04, 2020, 06:06:21 PM
Look inside and see if there is a hopper and a coin mech and let us know.
You will need those two chips anyway to change the percentages.

Coin-out jam....and no hopper or coin mech...
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure

It was working earlier and then when i went to cash it out the error popped up......  coin out jam
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on July 04, 2020, 07:31:54 PM
OK we can try the easy way first (without key chips)
I believe you stated somewhere that you have an enhanced board set.
If that is the case turn the machine off. Remove the lower mpu and then remove the coin battery. Reinstall the battery and the mpu. With the door open power up the machine. After the lower board does it's memory check  the VFD will say RAM error and will probably be making a loud warbling out of the speakers.  At this time don't worry about what the top box is doing.
Now with the door open turn the jackpot key 3 or 4 times then follow the directions on the VFD to press the reset button on the mpu for at least 6 seconds.
The VFD should now say close the main door. Do that and now wait for the top box to finish booting.
If all is good the machine should come back to life.
If you are successful play the machine but don't hit the cash out until you get a key 45 chip.
Let me know what happens then we can work on getting the hopper disabled.

Key 45 and Clear 224 are the best chips for this machine. Might as well have what works best on everything. My 45 chip has been invaluable on my Denver Duck several times

How low was the battery?
That may be the issue and the cash out problem might go away.

2.6 is pretty low.
PM user RB he usually has a good deal on the two chips.
They will also work on your Red, White, & Blue.
You should probably get both. I don't usually use the clear chip but it does happen.
Title: Re: Denver Duck...Com Link Failure
Post by: qbert on July 06, 2020, 04:52:46 PM
I looked at the picture of your MPU again and I noticed that there is a DSV00042 card on the board. This is an enhanced sound board for S2000. Since all of the sound for your Denver Duck is generated from the top box it has no use in this machine. You can remove it and put it in your Red White & Blue S2000 and get enhanced sound on that machine if it does not have one in it already. Just a thought.

Your inbox is full you need to empty.

Make sure you have no credits on the machine and use the key 45 set up per instruction on this post and make sure you use the TITO settings.
Also make sure you set the hopper to zero. You can do this without the key but you must still have zero credits on the machine.

With what you have done to the machine you should not have to key this machine

One more thought are there any LEDs lit on the TITO board? You may have hurt that with the power surge.
That may be why your getting the error.
