Jackpot Stampede Deluxe sound eproms
« on: April 14, 2025, 06:47:41 PM »
I picked up a Jackpot Stampede Deluxe. Model 40x dotmation slot machine. I managed to get it working. But I have no sound. After checking in the manual it states some games use 3 sound eproms and some use 4. Mine has 3.. so I am hoping that someone could verify quantity for this game title. I am adding a picture of mpu. . Also if this is my sound problem where can I get these sound eproms? I'm not sure if the prior owner removed it? Bought game in non working condition.  Thanks

U18 is not used... turn up all 3 volumes in the settings. Then check the connections on the speaker.. then check the molex connection.. perhaps disconnect or from the metal base on the machine and plug it in directly..

Upon powerup, you should hear one BONG noise regardless the volume level setting. This bong indicates the sound system has booted properly. More than one bong will determine a failing ROM chip.
'
Near the bottom right corner of your CPU board in your picture there is a small black jumper, I can't read the position it is set to in your picture, but it has two settings. One setting is for 8MEG (27c0080 or 27c801) sound ROMs and the other if for smaller size sound ROMs. In the case of this board I believe uses 1MEG (27c010) size ROMs. Make sure this jumper is correct.

The other thing to check is the wiring to the speaker. I believe the speaker is in the coin tray and connects when the coin tray is set in place.

Lastly, you will need 12 volts for the sound to work properly, this is something you should be able to check. I believe there may be a separate fuse on the power distribution board under the switching power supply in the steal cage for the 12 volts, assuming someone hasn't replaced the power supply with a computer power supply. If you hear any sort of POP or hiss coming from the speaker when you power it on it is likely the 12 volts is ok and not your problem.

Thanks. I checked the continuity from backplane to speaker. It's OK.
Changed sound settings. No change.
No bong or any other sounds.
Looks like the bottom power supply has been changed.. so not sure where I can check the 12v?
Not knowing the games history I'm not sure when the sound worked.. but the prior owner made it sound like it did.

The sound adjustments will not effect the initial BONG noise.

Did you check the jumper on the CPU board?

Post a picture of the power supply they wired in, and the wiring they did.

With the usual suspects out of the way, what about the speaker itself?  WMS used cheap speakers and wiring, and this one could have died.  The Molex connector and the blind connection is usually the culprit for no sound, but if you're getting good flow to the speaker from the backplane, it sounds like it should be good.  The earlier mention of the jumper is correct, but it's actually reversed.  Stampede Deluxe uses the higher density EPROMS for sound, hence there's only 3 of them.  I believe the machine would throw an error if the jumper is in the wrong place as it wouldn't be able to read the Sound EPROMs, but I could be wrong.  In any case though, it still wouldn't account for not having a bong sound at startup, that should happen regardless of anything else.  WMS electronics are pretty strong, so I wouldn't suspect an issue with a board/chip component.

Thanks. I'll try a different speaker. I will also take a pic of the power supply they put in.
I also thought it odd with no bong.. nothing.
Will check and get back.
When I got the game.. both boards were not pushed in ..
I think the owner was looking at them and did not reinstall all the way. After reinstalling. In came up with an error that I cleared with a soft clear. Game has been working fine but no sound. Don't know if former owner did anything to it except to replace power supply.

PS - I just compared your jumper to my Stampede board, and they're both in the same position, so it's not that anyway.

Could this aftermarket PS be the sound problem?
Can the original PS be rebuilt?
I will remove it if it will help.

Did you check it for 12 volts?

Are all of the LEDs lit up on the I/O board?
