can a game king with an 044 board run without a varta battery?

Yes, but if your 044 board has a varta battery, you need to remove it and U24 for it to work.  However; if your flash board is an international version, it will not boot up without the Varta (you will get a Tell Tale battery low tilt, which you can't clear unless you have a working varta on it).  So make sure all you are going to use on that mpu are US flash boards BEFORE you start removing components.
