Title: Strangest IGT LCD Touch Screen Quirk!!!
Post by: Matt411 on June 19, 2014, 10:56:14 PM
This problem just recently started. I have an IGT game kind 6.2, with newer LCD monitor installed... not sure which brand.

The strangest thing happens... if I stand up and play the machine, the touch screen doesn't work... I have to sit on my chair and my feet can't touch the ground... yes this is really happening to me!!! The machine is on a wood stand and there are some magazines under the machine to prop it up so it's not sitting on the power cord. I haven't had this issue until just recently. Even tried standing up with shoes on... still nothing.

I've tried everything from calibration to switching outlets + surge protectors.

I'm assuming this has something to do with a ground issue. I did notice some of the black tape around the touchscreen when I open the machine is starting to peel up... could that be the case? What is the purpose of that tape anyway?

The outlets in this room in the wall are 2 prong but I plug the surge protector in using a 3 - 2 prong converter then plug the machine's 3 prong cable into the surge protector... this has worked ok until just recently.

Again, when I sit on my stool with my feet not touching the carpet the screen works like a charm. BUT, if I stand up... and I have a hand touching the metal cabinet then the screen.... the screen works, screen doesn't work when I just use 1 hand touching only the LCD.

Any suggestions on what this weird issue could be? ???

I've run into this problem before and might have a solution depending on if you have the same conditions.  First off can you confirm whether your LCD is mounted in a frame and sitting on the shelf of the machine, or is it a door hung type where it is anchored right to the door opening bezel?

I've added some photos to my original post. The monitor is mounted on some metal frame inside the machine.

Also, if it is a loose ground wire... where would this wire be?

Proceed as follows...

Boot your machine up so the game is ready to play.  Leave the main door open and pull out the two cherry switches just to the right of the monitor so they click in the out position thus tricking the machine into thinking the door is closed.  While the door is open now...confirm the game is playing as normal....press some bet buttons.  Then proceed to touch the screen standing, sitting, doing a jig, or doing a head stand.  Let me know if it now works consistently regardless.

I have tried that and it still didnt work while standing. Should the door be open before i boot the machine up ?

Eh...in that case we do not have similar problems.  In my case over about 10 machines in a batch of 20 the foam padding around the black plastic door bezel was pressing to hard up against the touch screen and caused anomalies exactly as you are getting.  That's why I wanted you to try it with the door open.  In my case the solution was to adjust the monitor tray towards the back of the machine to relieve the pressure.  Since that's not your case then I might suggest swapping out the touch screen board with a known good one as you can get grounding issues from a partial board failure.

Ugh that sucks! How much do those cost and where can I get them boards? Btw, this machine came from a guy that got it from ohio river slots.

Try running a extention cord that uses a outlet that's grounded(3 prong) is what they are saying.  Your surge protector isn't grounded.

Like Jim said, maybe another touch screen board would be worth a shot.

do the ground 1st easier than trying to swap a board you don't have there's a reason there's a ground on that plug

Easy enough to check your grounds first.  I did have a service call once where the touch did not work unless one hand was touching the metal door and the other touching the screen.  Solution was to move the machines power plug to another outlet that was on a different circuit in the house.

First off check your machines two primary internal grounds that could effect the monitor.  The first one ....look for a braided silver cable that wraps from the inside of the cabinet to the door.  It's in line horizontally just below the button deck.  Second one, turn your machine off and pull your monitor straight out.  Now look in the back right hand corner of the the monitor shelf for the big black plug.  There should be a green ground wire just to the right of it that sneaks out past the black plug and clamps to the plug bracket.  Check and make sure those two locations are nutted down tight.  At this point I would turn the machine on and test again if anything seemed loose to you.  If not, then proceed to run a 50' extension cord to the other side of your house and plug it in, test again.

If still a no go, next then next thing I would try is removing the back-plane and look for any screws or nuts that could have fallen behind there.  Beyond that I would go for trying a tested working touchscreen board.

When you run your extension cord...make sure it is 3-prong type and run to an outlet that accepts a 3-prong grounded plug.

I found the issue! It was in fact the outlet. I got an extention cord that accepts 3 prong and plugged directly from my kitchen outlet which is 3 prong and the touchscreen works flawlessly!

I really need to replace these stupid old 2 prong outlets in my house, especially my game room.

thanks for your help everyone!!!
