Title: DECK BUTTON REMOVAL SECRET?
Post by: RiseLikeRa on November 22, 2014, 05:31:03 AM
Greetings All:

I have learned from the manual that I can remove the white plastic deck/control buttons from the bottom by removing the entire deck and pushing them up and out with a paperclip.  I was wondering if there are any secret custom tools that I can make to get the buttons out from the top without breaking them?

Any suggestions?

Lots of views, no replies?  I would have have been sure that someone here had made a little thin hooky thingy by now.

Perhaps I can invent something.

Ra.
Those white plastic buttons become very brittle from the bulb heat and time. I've broken my fair share trying to take them apart. If you can figure out a safe way to get them apart I'd like to see it..

Gary I took up your challenge.  Silence is the mother of invention.  After getting no responses I stared at the deck for a few minutes.  I tried to pry a button up and I too am afraid to crack one.  The space between the button and the housing is VERY narrow.

My solution and contribution to you and others on this list who have helped me out so many times is this...

I needed a non rigid, non conductive something that could get UNDER the button and allow me to lift the button up without damaging it.  I went to the garage and came back with a legnth of 20 pound test fishing line.  I cut about  15" and put a loop knot at both ends to slide my index fingers in.  I snaked the line down under the button and held it across the axis of the button left to right.  Once left to right I pulled up and out came the button.  I repeated the process 8 times over with relative ease.

Sweet invention.. One of those (why didn't I think of that) moments. You should make a short video and post it.. So your removing the whole center of the button, and not just the clear cap.. Thanks for the tip..

The "Ra Remover" has worked for 12 buttons so far.  I took all of the buttons out of my games and cleaned years of smoke and stugots off of them.  All of the buttons look a lot brighter.

Glad to be of help to you my mentors for a change.

Gary you are a funny man.  Nylon string?  Colored fishing line?  If guys and girls who love these old games, starting with my family here on this list, can benefit the more the merrier.
