Title: Tested my Fortune 1 sounds boards, finally!
Post by: shortrackskater on April 29, 2017, 05:12:45 PM
I finally got around to testing the three Fortune 1 sounds boards I bought years back, not knowing if any worked or not.
The board is mounted above the hopper although, from my understanding, there weren't too many made with sound.
I've removed the hopper years ago but I never bothered to see that all the serial numbers on the tags and etched in the machine match!
The board is an easy removal: just 4 nuts and two connectors, and it's out. I put in the first one and it worked!  :applause:
Unfortunately the other two didn't although I did hear hiss from the speaker with one board. The other didn't make any sounds... maybe the audio amp? I did try switching the game chips (from the dead board to the "hiss" board) and whatever the other long IC was, with no results. It was getting late last night but next time I'll swap out the same from the known good board, which I should have done in the first place!

I have fixed about 30 of those boards and the strange thing is most of them had a small 2 uF Tantalum cap that had dried up and gone bad.
You can replace it with a 2.2uF electrolytic.

A couple had bad audio amps and a couple more had bad volume controls.

One had a bad -5V regulator.

Thanks! I'll try that first.
I'd love to get both working.

I hope that you get the sound working.  My first F1 had working sound.  I thought it was annoying.  Once I sold that game and got one that did not have sound I missed it.

I have 4 working F1 games now 3 with sound.  The oldest is the 21 game with the Sony monitor.  Fortune Coin Company.  From the late 70's I believe.
