Title: American Coin Enterprises Model 201- Won't Boot Up
Post by: CrookedPaddle67 on July 09, 2020, 02:08:43 PM
Anyone know anything about this machine?

I have had it for about 8-10 years...it sat not powered on for a long time, now it won't boot up
I get power to the board and video comes on.  Replaced CMOS battery, no luck.

Is it worth fixing?

Thanks

For me, dirty contacts have a way of messing with stuff. I'd try pulling all the connectors you can see and re-seat them. I'd also inspect all the IC's on the MPU board, that are in sockets. If possible, can you pull that MPU and post a picture of it for us?
I don't know much about this machine but this should be a good start.
There might be a re-set procedure following the battery change. If so, I don't know what it is but I'll look into it.
And perhaps (let's all hope!) another member will chime in soon.

All connections seem tight, nothing seems to have worked its way loose.

MPU pic attached.

Did you try pressing firmly on all the eproms, and power back up?
Is there any reset key or button on the machine? If so, press it or turn the key and see what happens.
Thanks for the photo!

Made sure all the eproms were seated.  Tried reset button, key and all combinations of power up, no luck.
Guessing it's just done...unless anyone has any other ideas, probably not worth trying to fix, may just scrap it.

CrookedPaddle67,

Wow, American Coin...  Now, there's a company a movie could be made from.  I do not think there is much documentation out there for this game.

Does the game function at all.  What happens when you drop a coin in?  Is there any sound or do the buttons light up? When you replaced the battery was there any damage to the traces around it?

Game doesn't boot up, CRT comes on, but no signal to it.  I see power to the MPU (3 lights on the board).  Game was working, it sat for several years, now won't boot up.  Thought it might be the CMOS battery, so I soldered on a new one, nothing looks damaged on the board...tried a bunch of reset combinations, no luck same symptoms...none of the buttons work, no sound, coins just drop into hopper, (has a credit bypass button on it also, no function).  all connections are good.

Did you try the reset with the door open?
If not, try with the door open, power on,  then close the door.

Yep, door was open.
There is a reset button on the inside, there is also a key switch on the side, tried combinations of that...nothing responds.

No progress.  Probably going to scrap it...unless somebody near Chicago wants to come and get it.

Alan (member Badbaud) is dealing with an America Coin Keno right now. He's having the same issue with getting information on the machine. But knowing him, he'll find something. So if you don't mind hanging on to your machine a while, it might be worth it if he finds something as it may help with the resolution of your machines issues.

I know I asked before but did you ensure everything was firmly connected... MPU, or other boards in long, molex, etc.  connectors?

Yep, checked all connectors, unplugged/replugged, power supply is good, CRT is good. I replaced battery.  Just no CPU activity.
It will sit in my basement until spring probably.

I know this is late in the game...If that is your MPU. . . I just noticed that the opaque labels that normally obscure the EPROM programming windows are missing. If you know American Coin's story, you might speculate, (like I am now) that the gaming commission probably required the programs be destroyed (The way to do this is by bombarding the EPROM with UV light.) It is also possible, if the MPU had any exposure to regular sunlight, the EPROMs could eventually become erased / corrupt.
