Does the different boot version matter to the image on the HD?
Is new preferred over the old or doesn't it matter? (Assuming he must replace the hd)

One is not better than the other, BUT everything must be a match. The chips (SB & SG) and the drive and the Bios must ALL be a match. some mismatched will even fully boot up and work great.....until you hit a bonus round, then the machine just stops.
