Normally the best version of MAME is always the absolute latest, but in this case the latest version of MAME that runs PE+ games without noticeable issues (missing graphics chips aside) is 0.183, as the bill acceptor emulation has been broken since 0.184.

However, a good number of PE+ games have been added since 0.183 thus you will need a later version to run them (e.g. the current version of MAME as of March 2019 is 0.207) but you will only be able to insert coins (1 credit at a time!) unless the ROMs are back-ported to an older version where the bill acceptor still works. It is possible to add later PE+ ROMs to older versions of MAME if you want to compile your own build, however adding games to older versions is naturally not supported by MAME developers.

If you need a speed boost for an older PC (I saw XP 32-bit in the message and instantly thought "Pentium 4"), download 0.179 since that was the last version which supported old/integrated video cards. Again, this older version may or may not include the games you want to play. Alternatively, some unsupported video cards may still work acceptably in the latest MAME if you force OpenGL mode (via mame.ini or the command line e.g. mame peplusgame -video opengl).

Thanks for all the insight. I'm currently running 0.154.0.0 so I plan to update to at least 0.183 to keep bill validator emulation going. Although I don't mind 1 credit at a time and would do it for newer games. What I used to do before I learned to activate bill emulation is save the game nvram file after a big hit and reload that when credits got low. The downside is replacing the nvram file with credits on it also resets the game accounting stuff back to that time of the win, so you can't check ongoing win/loss stats.

I have no idea how to compile my own build but I'll see if there is a tutorial or something at the MAME site. It would be great to have a build with just the poker and slot roms that I like and that work. Now I'm sifting through dozens of roms that I got from "the French site" and trying to find the PE+ gems. My dream game would be one called FLUSH FEVER or FLUSH FORTUNE but I think that was on the Game King. I've only found PE+ level roms, although I did find one Coral Reef slot which I think is an S+ title. So I really don't know what's out there or where to find it. And I've just focused only on the IGT PE+ so if other machine emulations are out there, they are well hidden.

I don't think speed is a problem with running just casino type games. Don't know if at some point the newer MAME versions goes beyond my AMD Athlon dual cores capability with WinXP 32bit as an operating system and a Geforce 8600 GTS graphics card. I'll keep 0.179 and OpenGL mode in mind although I don't know about command line stuff and have only ever used MAMEUI.

Thanks for the help.

I "updated" my MAME to version 183 and so far, so good.
I found a game rom called Jackpot Poker PEX2270p that has the bonus feature for 4 of a kind like treasure chest. Instead of chests it has 5 slot machines, pick one and the little graphic handle pulls and gives you three 7s and a random bonus.
Very fun. Seems to be complete except for no audio during bonus round, maybe that's normal for it.
Now if I can just figure out why "No Faces Pay The Aces" game locked up when dealt 1 ace no face.

I'm the one who got a hold of that Jackpot Poker game.  You're welcome.  :)

As I recall, it should have some very simple audio during the bonus.  After you select a "machine", the reels animate and there are three "dings" as the three 7s appear on the reels, followed by a higher pitch "ding-ding-ding-ding-ding" as the win amount is revealed.  I'm not sure why you're not hearing that audio, assuming you're hearing other game audio.

It's trying to do a mid-game payout from the hopper, and unfortunately the MAME code doesn't support it and it freezes.  The work-around is to set the maximum mid-game hopper payout to zero, so then any dealt ace payoffs will trigger a jackpot handpay lockup where turning the reset key will get you past it.

Yes, you are right about the sound, I guess I expected music or trumpet fanfare or some thing. It works great and is a very fun game.

I"ll set that mid game payout back to zero in No Faces.

Let me say thanks for all the great work on that and all the really cool stuff you do. :applause: :hail:
If you ever write a book on the secrets of the best poker and slot roms and optimizing them for Mame, I'd buy a copy.

Thanks again.
