1982 Bally E-2000 series - powering up question.

I purchased a 1982 Bally slot machine which there is no other identification on it, but I'm told it is most likely an E-2000 series. I have not plugged it in yet. My question is, do I flip the power switch toggle to on before I plug it in? If I plug it in and the switch is toggled off, won't I have to open the door to toggle on which will have to stay open to go through its self-diagnostics?
