Keep the resistor in the circuit.

If you're using a non-rechargeable battery, that's when you use the diode (prevents the battery from charging), so you need the resistor to trickle-charge the battery.

The diode is put there when using a NON-RECHARGEABLE Lithium battery as shown here:
