Please post a couple of photos of the machine to help us identify it for sure.
One of the outside, and one with the door open.

It's an M Slot.  First thing to check is the cork cam followers on the reel kickers.  They deteriorate and fall apart with age.  I made a video a while back if you're not sure how to remove the reel basket.

Ok that eliminates that common problem then.  How is the motor drive belt on the back of the reel basket?  Do you have a jackpot reset key for it? It's also used to get into the menu systems which can tell you what the machine is Tilting for.

Check out this thread.

A motor drives a camshaft via a belt and the cam shaft rollers on the reel kickers get the reels in motion.  Another solenoid on the reel kicker stops the reel where the mpu says it should.  Parts aren't the easiest things to find for these machines, but you run across some from time to time.  Personally I think the M slot has a lot of character.  It has modern electronics (well for the mid 80's), but the feel of old school mechanical slots.

Sounds like a cool bit of McGyvering - some before and after pics would be interesting.

lever could have been done better. look at hopper motor was valuable clue. screw limits open travel.
