I just got this for $900 off Craiglist. It's working perfectly. The paint is OK, but I'd like to strip it, polish it, and repaint it properly.
Is there some method or product that is standard to do this with?
I don't want to screw up this beautiful machine. It's 100% complete and working. My 8th slot machine, my first Antique slot.

Congrats on your first antique slot. I think you will be hooked now. You got a nice find on the war eagle. Is the photo of your machine? If not, looking forward to seeing yours.
As for stripping, painting and polishing. Some will say leave it as it's only original once. However, that is up to you.
If I was to do it. I would use a gel paint stripper (some call it aircraft stripper) and let it sit as directed and use a toothbrush to get into the corners. Then rinse it off and repeated if needed. It will probably take a few shots to get it all. If you polish it. I would personally do a light polish. I don't like the real shiny look myself.
Now for the paint. On that machine I would use 1 shot sign paint. I know a lot have people who used that back in the 80's for restorations.

Thanks for the info and pics. I'm looking at different War Eagle paint schemes right now and trying to find one that I really like. I know I want to have the eagles chest be shiny metal, I'll probably try and polish is pretty bright. Here are the actual pics. It took me 3 days to upload them *(slow internet). It's ready for a "re-do". The mechanics works perfect. I think after a proper paint job and a new bottom oak piece (2 cracks), it will be fully restored. The sides are perfect. Great deal for $900!

I don't think you need to replace the base. Almost all of these old oak cabinets crack. Normal you can just glue & clamp them back together. Best of luck with your new toy.

There use to be a Company in Denver or Lakewood called something Bell..maybe Royal Bell?..
He purchased a lot of the old Mills parts & manufactured some. His machines were extremely nice & run smooth with the 4 clicks.
They were nice but not made in the 1930,s.
If you take out the Meck. many times the original Mills label will be on the left side with a date of manufacturing.
I have a Mills Castle Front & I removed the Drill Proof Sides & found an original label, with the inspector initials & a date of 12-26-35.
Make sure your Clock stays oiled. It controls the reels spinning.
They are fun & will be working after were all gone.

Please don't replace the wood base.
Yours looks original & should have a Serial Number on the Back?
After a new paint job with the correct colors you could get around $3,000.00 for one.
A new Base would take the serious collector out of the bidding.
The Machine should have Mills part numbers on most of the main parts.
The re-manufactured ones don't have part numbers.
You may not know what you have?

Thanks so much for the info! I will leave the orginal base for sure. I can clamp and glue it no problem. I'll look for some of those numbers tomarrow.
