Title: Game constantly tilting
Post by: Brewchap on March 05, 2024, 01:42:41 PM
This game keeps tilting with a 71 or 72 code, sometime it will might tilt on the 1st game or 50th. This game must have been setting for a long time. The reel assembly was frozen up with caked on grease.
I cleaned and washed until the parts started moving again.  I even when as far as cleaning the reel readers with a Q-tip and alcohol.
I lubricated all the pivot points with Lithium grease while I "break in" the rack with the thought the grease could break down the old cruddy grease and I would go back after a few days and wash out the Lithium grease and use a heavier grease in it's place.

I tell you all this in case it might help to locate the problem that I am having. The game will tilt, out of the blue. Using the reset button will clear it for just a second, then back to tilt. The only way that I have found to clear the error is to go into the "menu" and advance the hopper or even run a solenoid test. Once I do this, I can hit the reset, close door and play a game...until it tilts again. I'm not sure what other adjustments I can do.

I do question the "hack" on the cherry switch. Why are there capacitors here?

I am constantly get an error 72. I tried moving the reel reader to another position and it did not change. Still the same error.

Edit: Is there a way to calibrate the reels?

Sorry you're having a tilt problem. Which machine do you have?

Do you have all the manuals that are available on this site? Have you run all the self-tests?  I had to replace the kicker switch on mine, and for sure don't have that capacitor hack. Not sure the use, perhaps to help filter or clean up power?

On older pinball machines they use a similar capacitor trick. Because the computer can only monitor so many switches in a cycle it might occasionally miss a switch being hit by the ball. The capacitor retains line voltage long enough for the computer to make one full round and ensures the credit is applied. I have no idea if there is a similar issue going on here but its something to consider.

Lift a leg of that cap, maybe, see what happens?

I have a Bally 3 reel E2000. 1985 7's.

I've downloaded the manual. I have ran a few tests. I think that I should take a closer look at the switch test to see if I can find my problem there.

I'll mess with the caps this evening to see what happens. Maybe the caps are there trying to fix the issue that I'm having.

I would definitely run a continuity check on those switches. They may be getting harder to find, but badbaud had one posted on eBay I picked up.

I reread your post. What/where is the kicker switch?

I did the switch test. The coin, hopper, and the 2 cam's test fine. The door switch does not work. I could not find anymore. Still getting the occasional 72 error. Tried again swapping the reel readers, but that didn't fix it. I did remove the green cap. I'll try removing the red one now.

Nope, clipping the red cap did not change anything.
Is it possible that I don't have enough grease or the right grease on the pivot points?

I think that tomorrow I will pull the reel assy and check the measurements. Maybe there is something "off."

Looking at the pic you posted, you can see on the ripped diagram the lower of the 2 switches labeled Kick sw. I think it's the one below the Cap your troubleshooting. I'm far from a pro, so I need to go check which one is which and will post back.

Those are the kick and arm switches on the side of the reel mech. Test 3 will verify their proper operation.

I gotcha. Switch test worked as expected. So far my luck has gotten better. I greased the pivot points again and my errors seemed to have gone away. I'm going to run $100 through it and see what I get.

Hey pearson28, I wanted to thank you for your help. I still have a lot of learning to do but I really appreciate your help.

Well, it has been a couple of days now, and I still get an 71 error.  :Scratch-Head: Anymore ideas? I welcome any and all ideas!

In the #3 switch test, I depress the coin switch wire and I get a 3. . .0.0.1., but when I release it, it goes to 3. . . 1.2.0.

Is this correct? I read somewhere in my search, that was a code to turn a coin light on and that maybe the I/O card might be bad.

Cleaned and removed more of the old grease from the reel assy. Now no more errors.
