I have an IGT PE Plus with a Coin Mechanisms coin comparator number CC16-B 8/89 with a quarter. It will occasionally not accept a quarter and drops through into coin tray. Does it need to be cleaned, if so, how? It looks like an adjustment screw? I also have a CEI with a coin comparator number CC40 9/90 which works perfectly and never rejects a quarter. Anyone give me some info? Thanks.

cleaning is pretty straightforward...you can take a few parts off and wipe everything down with a soft, damp cloth or use a light cleaner like Simple Green or similar. canned air to blast out the dust bunnies that can build up around the optic path.
the adjustment screw/potentiometer may be all you need to do...i was trained to make a 1/4 turn then test acceptance again. also simply swapping the sample coin often helps acceptance.

Try turning the adjusting screw all the way to the left or - side.. You could also try a different quarter in the sample slot..

If this is just for home use and you aren't worried about rejecting slugs or foreign coins like a casino would be then the sensitivity adjust can be turned all the way to the negative "-" side, which is counter-clockwise direction. The coin comparitor can also have its rake spaced open pemanently with a piece of folded paper, that way all quarters will drop thru the coin comparitor for sure and never get rejected back to coin tray, they will always drop into the coin optics path as an accepted coin and no more problem.

But then nickels, pennies, washers, etc. will also not get rejected. While that's an okay thing to do when troubleshooting coin-in issues, it's not a good permanent solution.
Use the adjustment to make its sensitivity less likely to reject coins, as described above, and you should be good to go.

The IGT still is occasionally rejecting quarters. Changed out the quarter in the unit adjusted the screw. It went from not accepting quarters at all to again rejecting quarters occasionally. I have attached a blow up photo of the adjustment screw area which looks different than my other coin comparator. Not sure if this is normal for the model or not. Have not cleaned the unit and not exactly sure what need to be cleaned.

I don't think a replacement coin comparitor is very costly, you might want to just replace it.
Since it looks like they are going to increase the min wage to $15/hr then you've probably already spent enough time to pay for another cc. :garfield: <just a sign-of-the-times joke>
Also, sometimes people don't get the sample coin installed exactly right. The left edge of the sample coin should fit into the groove or slot on that side of the coin holder, and the sliding cover should be as far to the left as possible to cover as much of the sample coin as possible. The screw on the sliding cover should be tightened enough to hold the cover close to the sample coin surface.

In the picture of your adjusting hole, to the left side of the hole pictured is the adjusting pot. Take a small flat blade screw driver and turn that adjustment all the way to the left or counter clockwise, then try it again. It looks like the circuit board inside might not be installed straight. If its off just a bit, then your coin optics inside could be off center too. I would take it apart and clean to whole comparitor. 4 small screws hold the cover on over the board. The dissemble the rest and clean the coin slot. I have had a couple comparitor that had bad solder connections on the board where the plug attaches. If this doesn't help, you should be able to pick one up for around $30 I'm guessing..

When you adjust the sensitivity pot, I recommend turning it back and forth a few times to (temporarily) clean up any oxidation that could be making a bad contact. Turn the adjustment all the way back and forth a few times, then all the way counter-clockwise (away from the +), then just the slightest bit back to the right (towards the +).
