Title: Qcp simm programmer
Post by: hotlsot on March 12, 2024, 11:09:55 AM
I purchased one of these units several years ago and it's always worked fine. Now when working with a 8 mg cgf I can erase the simm, but when the simm starts to write I get an error message that reads "error reading data". I thought it might be the simm but this pattern repeats on 4 different simms. The unit will erase and program the 16mg simms. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure it detects it as a CGF simm first.  Also the CGF simms are the first to go bad.  They could be all bad.  Try cleaning the connects with an eraser.

This machine detects the simm. As an experiment I read a mystical mermaid file and it read fine, saved it, erased the same simm then attempted to write the mystical mermaid file  to the same simm. Still get the "error reading data" error.

Try re-installing the firmware.

Installed the program on a different computer, same results. Do I remember years ago when I installed this we had to do something weird with the driver, or is that the flash burner I'm thinking of?

Check that. The unit erases, writes and verifies a 16 meg simm so it can't be a driver. When I detect the simm I get Simm 0 in the position box, 0x0 in the address box and 8 meg in the size box. I've made sure the simms are 8 meg not 4. What am i missing?

It was these.  I know I have a whole box full of bad 8mg CGF's.

Just for the hell of it I pulled a 4 meg simm. I read the the simm save the file, erase the simm and get the same error when it comes time to write the same file back to the simm. It's just these cgf simms that don't work.  Any ideas?

Check for a cracked solder on burner where the simm slot mounts to the board.  I had to solder mine to get cgf's to work.  I will see if I an find a pic of it.

Mine occasionally has trouble writing CGF simms.  Did you try re-flashing the firmware like sixcardmark suggested?  It's fixed the issue every time for me and others.  Loading the software on a different computer is not the same as re-flashing it.

I'm not exactly sure what it means to reflash the firmware on these units.

On the QCP menu click on "Quad Clone" at the top center, then "Firmware updater".  Then navigate to where your QCP program is installed on your computer.  Select the only firmware file in the directory and select it.  It will only take a second or two to flash it and hopefully you'll be reading and writing CGF files with no problem afterwards.

Do you happen to know the name of the firmware file? As I try to locate the file nothing appears as a bin file, when I select all files I can't determine which is the firmware file

Mine is "simm_burner_v2_3.fwu".  If you don't have it PM me an email address and I'll send it to you.

Got it running, thanks to both Tilt and Sixcardmark for the help

Glad to hear you got it working again.  Not sure how or why it does that, but it always seems to be CGF simms that it fails on when the firmware gets corrupt.
